Bald Bride: My Alopecia Story, Part 4

While I continued to go about my stressful life as usual including breaking up with Jonathan (more on that in the book), I met Aaron* shortly after the New Year.  During our lunch hour, I happened to sit across from him in the courtyard at WMA.  We ended up chatting about surfing, yoga, and self-reflection of all things.  He told me that he believed in working on oneself and growing as a person.  I remember noting that I liked the way Aaron thought.  It also didn’t hurt that he was lean from…

Trichotillomania, alopecia, and other hairloss

I am sad to say that I've had another relapse, after so many months of not pulling, unfortunately I'm suffering from combination of two different types of hair loss, Trichotillomania, and then Alopecia areata, The parts I don't pull, fall out on their own, the doctor thinks its from so many years of damaging hair follicles and now they just can't handle the weight of my own hair once it grows to a certain point.

I think I've just given up, I'm going to be like this forever, because…

The Bald Man and the Fly

THERE was once a bald man who sat down after work on a hot summer's day. A fly came up and kept buzzing about his bald pate, and stinging him from time to time. The man aimed a blow at his little enemy, but — whack — his palm came on his head instead. Again the fly tormented him, but this time the man was wiser and said:

"You will only injure yourself if you take notice of despicable enemies."

Alopecia...its effects on my kids

I have had AA for 25 years, and in the last 9 years it has progressed to varying forms of AT and AU. I have always had a life with Alopecia, it has NEVER ruled my life, until now. I am in a rutt, I worry nonstop about the effect that it has on my husband, my kids and my life. My husband came back from his second deployment in Dec 10' I had enough hair to cover, a little hair glue here....a little hair spray there.... you know I was making it work. After Christmas I gave up on… Continue

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a relatively new psychology method to help people deal with issues in their lives. I encourage those who are having a hard time coping with their hairloss to research this method of therapy. "Get Out Of Your Mind And Into Your Life" and "The Happiness Trap" are two of a few books on this topic and there is plenty of information online about it. Psychologically speaking I've never found doctors very helpful in aiding their patients cope but this method… Continue

AA history /Writing it down

Wow - This was hard and at the same time soothing. IT made me re-think of where I was and how I got to where I am now. ( yes- even made me re-think the bad times too)

My dates may still be fuzzy for I went thru several depressed states and try not to remember some things....

Bear with me --

Thought I would post it here as well as putting it with the VERY extensive paperwork for the MD. Anderson Research… Continue

May 9th - A Day of Appreciation and Awareness

Mothers Day is a day to reflect on our love for Mom and to recognize that nothing else contributes to our own strengths, confidence and ability to love than having been loved deeply and unconditionally by our Mothers. Mothers Day has also become a day of activism among women and families touched by cancer.

This year Mothers Day has been designated as “Women’s Health and Cancer Awareness Day”! Individuals, teams, organizations and communities everywhere are using this day to advocate… Continue

Inspiration and Courage from ‘Across the Pond’!

All over the world, there are women blazing a trail towards more acceptance for women with medical hair loss. Danielle Baer is one such brave beauty from ‘across the pond’. Danielle, who lost all of her hair at age 18, speaks on British television about the impact Alopecia has had on her. She explains that she grieved the loss of her hair but now actually likes the way she looks bald. Sadly, though she feels comfortable with her baldness, she feels… Continue

Bald Love

MOTH AND BUTTERFLY by Terese Weir

Ever look in an empty cocoon as a most glorious butterfly leaves it? I’ll bet there’s a mirror in it.

When a woman loses her hair, which for her has been a safe haven and the only part of her body she truly believes is spectacular, she desperately wants to trust that her husband loves her for who she is, not for the dead protein on the top of her head. But when rage replaces reason, no soft whisper or kiss at the back of her now hairless neck is… Continue

A wonderful book!

I worked in my local school district for seven years. A 5th grade Teacher having read this book for many years along with her students, discovered I had Alopecia. She asked me if I would be interested in having a discussion with her class, and without hesitation I blurted out , "Yes, sure I will." This was my prior to Alopecia outgoing personality coming out. Later, I thought I can't even come to terms with having Alopecia myself, lil alone discussing… Continue

Music blog asks, What Rhymes with Alopecia?

I just happened upon this great blog post and article from "Creative Loafing" magazine about the lead MC from Atmosphere, a contemporary hip hop group, who talked about how alopecia affected his artistic career. I didn't find anything about it when I searched Alopecia World, so I figured I'd share it in my debut AW blog post :)

Here's his take, which I think is very poignant and hits on a key… Continue

Have you hear about Rio Hair? It happened in the USA back in the early 90's...

My first encounter with Alopecia was back in 1993 when I was dying my hair and perming my hair like crazy. And I got a brillant idea to try this crap I saw on a late night info-mercial about a hair care product call “Rio Hair”, it was suppose to be an all natural product to relax curly hair. Yeah well, silly me bought into that “infomercial” and purchased a kit. I put this “all natural stuff from Brazil” in my hair and guess what happened...

The spots started a few days later and I… Continue
