Profile Information

Relationship Status:
Married
About Me:
I was recently diagnosed a month ago with alopecia areata, after a large patch on the back of my head was noticed by a fellow colleague. Being a fitness junkie, and a person that thrives in stressful environments, I wasn't really prepared for how I reacted - first worried, then sad, then empowered, then sometimes all of these feelings within 30 seconds of each other...
Am currently in the process of reshifting my priorities in my life to focus more on my health and reducing stress - so maybe this diagnosis is a actually a good thing to happen to me? Am interested in hearing how others deal with this disease, and how their families and loved ones cope and best offer support.
Do you have alopecia?
Alopecia areata
Are you age 18 or older?
Yes - I am 18 or older

Hi Melissa,
Sorry to hear about the stabbing incident. I can understand how you feel. It's a real worry these days - the level of violence that people will go to. I guess the amount of alcohol consumed doesn't help. I know people are drinking more now and for longer periods of time than i can remember. I know a lot of people used to 'outgrow' the heavy drinking but that doesn't seem to be happening any more. It would be very stressful going into situations like that.
I was told that stress can 'bring on' autoimmune diseases like Alopecia. That you can be predisposed to suffering from an autoimmune disease, that it is in your genes and stress can be a trigger. Though no matter what we do we are bound to suffer from it eventually.
I have another week of holidays here. Have spent some time doing odd jobs like clean out the freezer, cupboards and wash the car. Have also started making a quilt for my parents for Christmas - i should pull my finger out though, not long till Christmas.
Jon is ok though could be better. He is very negative and i am finding it hard trying to help him be positive. He hasn't wanted to contact friends. Spending time with his brother, which is good but i wish he would spend time with some friends. His brother is trying to get a job and could be moving at the end of the year as there aren't many opportunities here. His eldest sister is also moving out early next year, moving to Brisbane. I don't know how he will go then being the only child at home.
Anyway, how are you dealing with your stress? Stress is not a good thing for us all round i think. My daughter does Yoga. I'm going to try it and see if it helps. I know music is a good stress reliever too.

Hi Liss,
A singer hey? You compose your own songs too? Would be nice to hear you. My 21 year old daughter is at the end of a three year Bachelor of Music degree. She has majored in composition. She has mainly written orchestral music but this semester she has branched out and written some contempory pieces.
Her myspace page is: www.myspace.com/nsartori
She is yet to upload any of this semesters work (except for a video that Jon took) but she should do that in the next week or so.
Jon had a look at The Lost Royals myspace. He said their good. Jon likes listening to AC/DC, Avenged Sevenfold, Slipknot, Bullet for My Valentine amongst others.
Hope that you and Aaron get over your flu quickly. Watch out for that 'man-flu' - it is a killer for women. ;-)
