About Me:
I have Alopecia areata ophiasis which is hard to treat but its also easier to hide. I found out I had it when I was 9. My doctors are now testing me for Lupus. I'm hoping it is just Alopecia. Right now in my life it is the worst its ever been. :( I still don't need to wear a wig but I have a feeling I will have to wear one soon. I like wearing wigs I'm just worried about what other people may think.
The good things in my life are my understanding husband and Family. I am a figure skating coach which I love! I also am a snowbroader which I do 2 to 3 days a week in the winter. I have my bachelors degree in graphic design and just starting taking acting classes.

NPC national level bikini competitor with AA. Don't let anything hold you back! My story.

Posted on May 13, 2015 at 12:55am 10 Comments

Hello fellow AA friends,

I just wanted to share my story. I have had AA since I was 8 and every year it gets worse! I now have to wear a full wig everyday. I use a lace wig that I glue on and sleep in. Like most people with AA I was nervous around new people and most of the time just wanted to hide! One day in 2011 I decided I'm not going to care what people think anymore! I signed up for NPC bikini competition. I was so nervous not to go up in front of 100's of people in a swimsuit but to… Continue

I'm shaving my head tonight :/

Posted on October 17, 2012 at 10:04pm 10 Comments

It's time for me to shave the little amount of hair I have. I'm so nervous! I'm just happy my husband is here for me. I got my new lace wig today and I'm really happy with it! I hope it looks good on :) My mom doesn't like the color and said I should color it or find something else. I think she just isn't ready for me to shave and wear a wig yet.I can't believe I'm finally brave enough to do this. Here we go :/

I'm at the point where I need to make up my mind! Lace wig help!

I'm not sure what to do!!! My hair is almost too bad to go out without a wig. I want to get a Freedom wig but I'm still saving up for it.I was hoping my hair would hang on till then but it's not. In the meantime I need something that looks natural that I can work out and figure skate in. I know I can just shave and go all natural but I'm not comfortable with that yet. :/

I'm thinking about trying a full lace wig and glue it or tape it on. I just wanted to have a little feedback from…

I ACTUALLY PURCHASED A FULL LACE GLUE LESS UNIT. NOT SURE WHAT PRODUCTS I WILL NEED FOR MAINTENENCE OR HOW TO CLEAN IT/  READING WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID, I THINK I KNOW WHAT TO BUY?  I WASN'T ABLE TO SPEAK TO ANY ONE, SO THE BUYING PROCESS GOT A LITTLE COMPLICATED APPRECIATE ANY TIPS YOU CAN PROVIDE. DO I NEED A REGULAR CURLING IRON OR A SPECIAL ONE, THAT DOESN'T GET TOO HOT?

Elaine, glad to hear you are happy and waiting for your new hair! I really liked what you said about being able to buy e hair you always wanted. I am afraid of losing more hair. I have scarring alopecia so I don't really go through growth and loss phases like other types of alopecia. I think that I do lose more at certain times though. I can still hide it but can't do all of my favorite old styles. I am the headband queen! I am so torn because I don't know if I will get to the point where I need a wig or if I will stay as I am. If I stay as I am, I think I can hide it forever. If it gets any worse...will be too hard. Would I go to hats? I look good in hats and scarves and love them. Work is the worst thing to imagine dealing with. My Scalp is all ridges and divots from the steroid shots too. Thanks for sharing...helps me deal with my issues.

Hi Elaine! Glad to hear that you are doing better and have taken the plunge into wigs. How's that working for you? I am not quite there yet. Still able to hide.... Atleast I think so!

impressed with your fitness know how hard it is to maintain a regime, have done marathons and weights since I was in my late 20 and now Pat and I are in our 60s the benefits show. You will never regret all the time and effort you are putting in now.

Welcome to my group, Elaine. I feel your pain. I, too, am worried about what people will think, and feel I will be wearing a wig full time soon, myself. Shedding has started again and what is hiding the hair loss is getting thinner and thinner. I know people at my relatively new job, one year, wonder why my hair is so thin, but don't say a word. Today, they were all talking "hair" talk, about styling and blow drying, etc. I only could sit and stare at my computer, and not join in the conversation. I felt so uncomfortable. At least you are in a colder climate. I am in heat and humidity.

I'm sorry you're feeling crummy about things. I've had alopecia universalis for many years -- let me know if I can help.
