Has anyone discontinued hair coloring since diagnosis with FFA? I usually get highlights done (which involve bleaching) and when I asked the dermatologist if I should stop, she said I could keep doing this. However, I am still thinking about not doing them for now. How about demi-permanent or permanent hair color? Has anyone continued to do this? The derm did advise that I limit heat styling of my hair (which I already was doing).

How about the frequency that you wash or brush your hair? Have you decreased your frequency since getting diagnosed to try to reduce loss? Switched to a different type of brush?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi ohnonotme, my dermatologist also said it was ok to color my hair. I did experience some itching when I colored my hair but I was experiencing itching in general. I buy my developer and color at Sally’s. After I was diagnosed with FFA I switched to a sensitive scalp developer which I also buy the Sally’s. I also switched from a liquid developer to a cream developer as a liquid is more likely to drip directly on to the scalp and you can be more successful in keeping a creamer developer from directly touching the scalp.

Good luck!

I am still colouring my hair but switched to Aveda products, not cheap but I find their colours softer and not full of bleach.  I actually don't lose hair when I shampoo, my hair loss is just at the front, and it happens insidiously

I used to do overall color but now I only do highlights. My hairstylist has 2 clients now with FFA and others with random hair loss issues. She now avoids overall color that sits on your scalp for any length of time and tries to find other ways to achieve hair color goals.

I have cut back or eliminated a lot of chemicals recently. I only get my hair foiled twice a year & will continue to do that. I have never noticed any excess hair loss afterwards. So until then I will continue doing what I am. This summer I did eliminate all of the bad ingredients in sunscreens that others recommended & I do notice a difference in the amount of hair loss compared to the  end of other summers.

My dermatologist said I could keep coloring hair too so I do. I cut out using the purple shampoo & conditioner that helps keep the color in because another post said that we should eliminate anything with limonene, linalool, methylcloroisothiazolinoe. I feel after eliminating those ingredients for a while I have less hair loss but without using the purple shampoo/conditioner the color is being stripped very fast because of the women’s rogaine & clobestatol I use on my hair. I also wash my hair every other day .
