Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa spots galore

I was so will-powered up at the work xmas party yesterday. I ignored the cheese platters and chocolate, strudel and cheesecake. I ignored the bread, bread sticks, dips and feta salad. There was still plenty of GF options and dairy-free things for me to eat and I was full to bursting.

Came home and bought the family pizza while I happily ate a mango and a peach.

Then as I'm watching TV I discover several new spots, all at the back of my head. I've been doing (nearly) everything…

Will my bald spots still show if i shave my head completely and go over it with a razor?

I'm Irish and pretty pale and I'm about to shave my head but i am curious to know if my spots will still show anyway. If so then what's the point? Aren't most of us trying to conceal it?
Need answers please.

Done...bald...transitioned...spot-less...liberated!

I will forever remember Saturday, March 5, 2011, the day I buzzed off what appeared to look like a light, scattered bird's nest on my head. It was amazing. I returned to my hometown, NYC, to my hairdresser of 19 years, Skipper Edwards. I initially went to Skipper because he was my sister's hairdresser; he was good with hair of women of color. Being bi-racial my hair was kinky, although it could be blown out. He proceeded, throughout the years to cut, style my hair in an appropriate way to hide… Continue

Transition

I am excited for it to be one week from today. I'll have been "bald" for a full 24-hours by then. Its funny that its been two weeks or so since I noticed my spots got so bad that its time for me to take down what's left of my hair. I decided to go back to my hometown, New York City to my hairdresser of over twenty years to buzz my hair off. It may seem like I'm making a big deal or ritual of all this, but, it is a big deal. I was diagnosed with alopecia areata 18 years ago. Its been slow going.… Continue

Round 2 is harder than expected

And it seems to be Round 2 of Alopecia. It seems harder this time than the first time around. Everyone keeps saying that it is easy this time because I know what to expect and I already have wigs. But, for some reason, I'm having a harder time with it and don't feel like I can tell anyone that I am having a harder time. Is that stupid?

Well, heres where I stand as of now. I started noticing it coming out in the shower about a week and a half ago....…

HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW

Whoa, doggies. It’s finally the end of 2008. I have to say, I’m not sorry to see this year go. What I am sorry to see go is my hair.

I am in the two percent of the population who has alopecia. “What is that?” you might ask. Alopecia is an auto-immune disorder of unknown origin which causes one’s body to think its hair follicles are a foreign body and begin launching scud missiles to destroy the enemy. It is not hereditary, it is not contagious. It… Continue
