About Me:
I've been living with alopecia for over 15 years. My hair had always been my crowning glory. It was thick, long and beautiful. I spent countless hours at the beauty salon and have had many different styles. The alopecia never was a problem because it was so infrequent. But that all changed. It started with quarter size spots that always grew back. In 2004 I lost half of the back of my head. By 2006 the entire back from ear to ear was gone. That area remains bald and other areas come and go. By 2006 I had beautiful shoulder length dreadlocks but it was getting hard to cover the bald spots. That summer I shaved my head bald and started to wear wigs. I had been to several doctors and I grew tired of the medication that did not work but messed up my body. In 2007 my hair started to grow back everywhere but the back. I braided it and kept it under a wig. The top has now grown back long and thick enough to cover the back but I know cover the back with a piece. It has been a journey that I know is far from over.

That is good that you talk openly with them about it..I have three children too..2,16, and 17..the oldest is a girl..the other two boys..and they haven't been as accepting..I have been very open with them..and my daughter was in a Cosmeotology program her junior year..and i did the same thing..except i had her do it for me..that is shave all my hair off..it was very liberating to do that for me..because like you said..i have always been very vain about my hair..and my two oldest were the same way...they thought..and still think that i was(am) losing it..now my hair has grown back in..alot in the back..and its all natural..but the crown..wont grow back..and the front has a mind of its own....I am learning to deal with it..and accept that I do have alopecia..and that its not the end of the world..but girl let me tell you..some days its more a struggle than other days..and i think my marriage ending really did a number on it..because my hair had grown back in alot..but then being so stressed...caused it to fall out again..thank you for the conversation..and sharing your experience..you have no idea how much this helps!

I agree with you wholeheartedly..and i had never thought about it that way...but it had become like a dirty , little secret. Even at home..i walk around alot with something covering my head..but mostly because my two teenage children made fun of the fact that my hair had fallen out. So I just felt very uncomfortable..even at home. I am so glad to have an outlet..a place where I can talk with other people sharing the same experiences as me..
