One day this last spring my daughter (she has alopecia) and her twin brother were in gymnastics and another mother (I think she is a doctor) was talking to her friend and what happened next floored me. In a normal voice (not in hushed tone that she was having the converstion in) ask her friend if my daughter (she pointed at her) was a boy. I never wanted to deck anybody so bad in my life. I was so blown away by the insenitivity that I could not speak.

I can understand being shocked hearing that coming from another parent, but please tell me you said something to her.

I was so taken back that I could not come up with a darn thing to say. That mother was not there. I am sure that other were wondering but not bold enough to ask. I really only talk to one other mother. We just end this session of gynmastics and we love the instructors and have signed up for the fall. Today we gave both the instructors an Alopecia Awareness bracelet.

People never cease to amaze me. Too bad it goes both ways. Just try to remember about karma, what goes around comes around. Like a boomerang, it'll come back and hit her in the head.

wow, that's terrible...

like, you expect these things from children (maybe) but for an adult to even say anything is just... beyond words... just thank god that your daughter didn't hear that, it may have gotten her upset =/

i once had a teacher of mine ask me "can i borrow your wig?" in a cafeteria filled with teens (at my high school)... i was so upset. thank god my best friend was by my side because i just wanted to CRY!! that was when i wasn't as open about it as i am now.

=/

Thank you all for your postings. Luckly I have not run into this mom/doctor again.

WE usually have positive experiences. My daughter is very outgoing and I hope that never changes. I hope she will be able to stand up for herself when people are mean. I will do my best to model that to her. I feel a little guilty because I feel that I am not giving her twin brother enough of my time. How do you balance two kids, one that needs more focus than the other?

Well I have another story! I took my daughter to the mall to get some clothes for school. everything was going well until we were having lunch. Haley and I were at a table eating our lunch when 2 teen girls walked by and one made a comment about my daughter that I could not hear and the other turned around and did the aww poor baby thing. I wanted to go after them and tell them that they were being rude but I could not leave my daughter and stuff to chase after these two. It steemed me. However on a more positive note I did sell a couple of my bracelets to ladies at the mall. I have gotten such a great response to my bracelets.

I must say I had a very different experience today. The room mom coordinator came into my classroom to talk. I thought that she was there to talk to the lead teacher but she focused on me and told me that all the room moms wanted to have a bakesale to raise money to help us get a wig for Haley. They want to do it during the holiday programs that span 3 nights. I was totally shock in a good way. The director said that it would be OK as well. What a nice end to the day and week.

That coupled with a friend at work that is having the kids that she teaches do a project for thier Bar mitzvah. We are getting the word out and money in to get Haley a really nice costom made wig.
