So I've recently started taking Prednisolone tablets again (the last time I took it was back in mid 2014) and was just wondering if anyone knew the time it took to take effect. The last time my AA was much worse (barely had any eyebrows and had quite a few noticeable patches) and by the end of the treatment I had full regrowth.

This time around, my AA is in a much better place (but still not the greatest) and I'm starting to get worried as I'm two weeks into the treatment and only just starting to notice regrowth. The reason for my concern is due to the fact that every two weeks the dosage goes down by half a tablet (two tablets for two weeks, 1 and 1/2 for another two weeks, etc.) and I don't know how effective it'll be in the coming weeks.

If someone could give me any info at all it would be much appreciated as I can't remember exactly how things went down the last time that I took Prednisolone.

I have lichen planopilaris or scaring alopecia.  Just came across a site drshah.com and he deals with homeopathic healing.  I researched the site and emailed them questions in India with quick response based on time dif.  I am going to be signing up with them for help and do believe in what he does.  I have used homeopathy for minor things over the past 10 years with success and feel this is what is going to help.  Never used any of the antibiotics and steroids prescribed.  I believe he also deals with lupus but you would have to do research on the site for more info.  Good luck!

Nobody here has mentioned anti-malarials. I have been prescribed Hydroxycloroquine which I have been taking for a couple of years. My post-menopausal frontal fibrosing alopecia (scarring alopecia) and a couple of creams for when the redness flares up - seem to be keeping any further loss at bay.  I'm just wondering if any other woman has taken this and how long could -. safely, go on taking it? Really need some help - outside of the medical profession!

OK, there are some for and against of steroides. But what about other methods? Natural medicines? Environmental or mode of living changes? Has anyone heard of acupucture or Shmuel Gonen"s method (Israel)? I have read about these topics but does anyone have experiences? Awaiting opinions. Good luck!

Hi Jack, The big problem I see is that Prednisone has LOTS of side effects and can have a negative impact on your health.  Even if it does grow hair, you can't stay on it and after you go off the drug you will probably lose what you have gained.  To me, it's not worth the risk of damaging your health for something that is NOT a cure.  Currently there is no cure for AA.

I have taken Prednisolone and it did nothing.

Update: I'm almost a month into my treatment and I have experienced growth of hair on (almost) my entire body: for the first time in my life I've been able to grow a beard, my eyebrows have grown back (although not entirely), I am starting to grow hair on my arms, legs and chest, and the patches on my temples have almost regrown entirely...

This however does not stop the anxiety I have been experiencing at the thought of what can happen when I stop taking the prednisolone (I think I have 5 weeks left) and I have been told that this is quite common amongst prednisolone takers.

For anyone reading this who is thinking of taking prednisolone, bare in mind that just like any other AA treatment, it is by no means a permanent fix.

I'm going to try and stay hopeful that the prednisolone will put a stop to the AA attacks but I'm also realistic in the fact that I know there is no permanent fix.
