Its JUST hair. We have all heard this. My personal opinion is YES. It IS just hair. It is not needed for daily life. It serves no purpose other than esthetics. Im talking about the hair on our heads. As someone with alopecia unversalis, I do miss having natural hair protection for my eyes and nose. I also know that after 29 years of alopecia with the loss, regrowth, loss, regrowth never ending cycle; I am much more content not having hair. The lessening of the stress is overwhelming.
But it is also not just hair. It is just hair to a public that is not affected by this disease known as alopecia and never even heard of it, or never had to worry about their own potential hair loss. But its not just hair. We are undulated with pictures on tv and magazines showing us its not just hair. Even on ads that are not selling hair products, we are shown that it is not just hair.
Until society is shown that hair is not a matter of importance alopecia areata will continue to be seen as a disease to be ashamed of. Until we show the rest of the world that IT IS REALLY JUST HAIR, we will continue to turn on our tvs, flip thru a magazine and see billboards, showing the presumed importance of hair.

However, like with "just clothes," (even more unnatural), wouldn't you rather check out the audience first to see if the people are kind souls before wandering into a situation bald? Regardless of what the change, if it goes against the cultural standards, people WILL look and comment. Think of all those long-hairs with love beads in the 1960s. They sure got a lot of press and condemnation for the opposite of alopecia!

One of my favorite things about alopecia is that it is a quick way to "weed out" the superficial fools.

I believe a lot of people that say "it's just hair" usually have a thick full head of hair and if it happened to them - they wouldn't be so quick to say it....

@Tallgirl you are absolutely right. There has been many times in history where people have been shocked and ridiculed others for their choices in clothing, hair styles etc. But it was the courage that those groups of people who chose to step away from the norm and embrace their choices, that made it a success. A success in the means that eventually others would not stop and stare, or make rude comments. We as a group as well as individuals need to take a stand and own and embrace who we are. Yes alopecia areata is a disease. A disease with no cure, ineffective treatments and a world of shame that goes along with it. But with many others that face an adversity, whether by disease or affliction. We have the choice, ultimately it is up to us to decide to let society make those dictations or to strive out as individuals. Make our impact or just settle to be a lamb.
BTW my boyfriend happens to be one of those long hair dudes LOL. I couldnt imagine him with short hair.

We all have to find our own path, but for me - 4 1/2 years after shaving off my departing hair - I'm really fine with being bald. I don't wear anything unless I'm chilly or in the sun. It's just who I am now. I really don't care anymore. Sure, I'd love to have my hair, and I cried when my eyebrows fell out again after coming in last year for 8 months, but being bald is the LEAST of my health problems.
