As traditional hair toppers don’t include sideburns cover, have any of you customised a wig and turned it into a topper keeping the sideburns?

If have how successful was it and what type of wig cap construction did you use?

All ideas and suggestions are welcome ❤️ As I’m eager to find a low cost solution for myself.

Yes, I too am interested in this. I am new to the alopecia world and I haven’t been able to find anything g online that is a topper for front and sides.

I went and talked to a place about possible solutions just to know what I might have available to me down the road.  She showed me a topper and then also had two pieces of hair that had been cut that would need to be glued on to the sides. She said the sides were then pinned to the existing hair to hold them in place along the back of the pieces if that makes sense.  She said it was tough to conceal the sides with just a topper, for obvious reasons, and you had to glue the side pieces on and then the hair of the topper would fall over them to help soften the look.

Hope you can visualize my description!

Yes I can visualise it seems a good idea and something I wouldn’t of thought of. There doesn’t seem to be an easy solution that covers the sideburns.

Hi Deborah,

I mucked around with various options then when I decided I couldn't get the colour right by myself I asked a hairdresser if she knew anyone in the area who supplied hairpieces. She pointed me to a lovely lady who mainly does extensions. She worked out the colour and measured the area I wanted the hairpiece to cover then ordered in the flat hairpiece. It was not expensive, $AU105. I then cut small triangles out along the back of it and sewed it back together so that it sits right. I sewed a couple of clips at the back and I glue the front. In fact, now that I trust my hairpiece to stay on I only put little dabs of glue right in the middle of my forehead and in front of my ears. It takes me about 30 seconds to "do my hair" in the morning and I'm glad I found the right person and method that works for me. My daughter went to an expensive city studio and paid about $500 for a topper which doesn't come down to her ears. Luckily she hasn't lost as much hair at the sides as I have and she almost gets away with it. I like mine better.

Good luck to all of you. It's not an easy journey and the options may be very different wherever you are.

Thank you Maz, I think the answer is I need to experiment with different wigs and toppers and another good idea of sewing them together.  I need to find a wig site that has reasonable cheap hair pieces to start experimenting.

Ive lost about 2 to 3 inches all way round face.  It’s very frustrating because the rest of my bio hair is okay.

I wonder is there any good You Tube videoclips explaining the different wig caps?

I am considering doing that myself. I have a number of wigs now, but have to decide which to sacrifice. I have been using a very low cost human hair bang set sewn into a fabric headband. I bought mine online through Vogue Wigs (Vivica Fox) With my bio hair pulled back, It worked the best on vacation (with a visor). I was wearing full wigs, but tire of them. I am looking at Hairdirect for their bonding headpieces. Has anyone done that rather than the salons that do it for you? I saw them at the CARF site.
