Has anyone heard or discussed BCG in relation to Alopecia?

The diverse and beneficial effects of BCG (common Tuberculosis vaccine) in humans is now being worked out. New data suggests that BCG may not only help in a diversity of autoimmune diseases, but also help to reverse allergies and strengthen the immune response to infections.

BCG has been known for over 30 years to boost TNF levels, which may be beneficial in autoimmune diseases by directly killing autoreactive T cells and inducing regulatory T cells (Tregs), as has been observed in clinical trials.

BCG is also one of the most affordable medicines, costing less than a dollar a dose in many parts of the world.

Several labs around the globe are actively researching the mechanisms by which BCG interacts with and modifies the immune system. These include studies ranging from infant prevention trials to interventional trials in adults with existing disease.

Type 1 Diabetes

The Faustman Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States is currently conducting a Phase II clinical trial testing the ability of BCG to reverse type 1 diabetes.

Multiple Sclerosis

The Ristori lab at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, is conducting at Phase II trial of BCG in multiple sclerosis.
