Hello! My first round with alopecia areata happened while i'm in grad school, now, a few years later and out of the blue, I lost about 85% of my hair including most of my eyelashes, eyebrows and arm/leg hair. The bit of hair i do have left on my head is SLOWLY growing, and i started using LATISSE which has helped with my eyelashes.

My question is more concerning my sudden weight loss. I am losing weight and not trying. I was just wondering if anyone knows of some correlation of why this is happening?

Are you stressing over your hair loss ? because when I lost my job, lost my girlfriend, and gained more debt, I lost 30 pounds. Hmm stress, heartache this may be the new key to lossing weight :P Not recommanded. Lots of life change can cause weight loss and leave us with no clue.
Yup, happened when I was in my mid forties and continued for about 2 years. There was no medical reason for it as I was told by the MDs. I actually weighted about 89 pounds at one point and started eating up to 3 -4k calories a day. By time I was in my early fifties, I lost most of my hair on my head and my weight remained at 108#s with a normal calorie/day diet. Now that I am in my mid-fifties, I have been dx with hypothyroidism and have gone from AA to AU. I believe the weight loss was due to hyperthyroidism just before my cells went to depletion. No scientific data to back this up since at the time of weight loss the Dr.s did not do any thyroid testing even at my request... but in hindsight I think that is what was going on. My recent shift from AA to AU is due to inoculations that I needed for a trip abroad, and the way my immune system reacted to this overload of vaccines.

I am glad the Latisse has helped with your eyelashes, something I would like to look into. My eyebrows grew back years ago when I got my eyebrows tattooed. I have just recently lost both eyebrows and all of my eyelashes. I could care less about any of the hair loss elsewhere, but my eyebrows & lashes... it has had more of an emotional impact than I expected.

So the long of all of this is to ask for thyroid testing and for autoimmune (Lupus indicator) blood work. If nothing shows at least there will be a baseline.
wow thank you! this has been so helpful....def look into Latisse, i've only been using it for a little over a month and have already noticed growth!
hi, interesting discussion! i did experiences weight loss without my will (even now im trying soo hard to lose little bit) i was thinking this was because stress period ,, last year when i was applying for medical school my doctor sent me to do blood test for thyroid because she was thinking that i had problems and blood test was good, always on border line but ok!
Have the dr. check your thyroid. Could be hyperactive or Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune attack on your thyroid gland.
