I have been learning lots about wig styling and everything that goes with it lately. I took my hairdessing, which didn't really get me anywhere with wigs but I met a girl that is helping me and am hoping to do it as a business someday. I have had AU since i was 15 and have already learned a lot just through that. but it sure is tricky! haha i just would love to help someone lik eme someday, or a younger child. I know what it is like and want to make others happy. anyway, this is an awsome group, :)

I was wondering if anyone knows the best way to take care of a vacuum human hair wig?

Well I am another one with a lot of experience in this department. I have had alopecia since I was three, and now manage a Full Service Hair Replacment center in Minneapolis, MN.
Cutting/ coloring/ or styling a wig IS NOT at all the same as someones hair.

Obviously there will be huge differences if it is a synthetic piece, however even a human hair piece is much different.
As others have commented, making a hairpiece look natural, and not LIKE A HAIRPIECE is an artform.

I would suggest going to a salon that specializes in this, please let me know if you need help finding one.
Although we only have one location, our industry is small and I can connect you with someone.

If there is NO hope in going to someone trained in cutting hair pieces/ wigs...here are a couple of tips for your stylist:
1. Never make straight cuts. It is always better to do ALL of your cutting with thinning shears, or at least to point-cut everything.
2. When/ if you need to color a wig avoid going lighter. Wigs do not lift (or highlight) the same as human hair. If need be buy a lighter colored wig and color darker.
3. When coloring darker, be careful with processing time. Wigs grab color much more quickly than normal hair. It may be best to use color combined with hot water to process. WATCH it carefully.
4. Be mindful of the products you are using on your wigs. Even human hair wigs cannot use normal human hair shampoo/ conditoner. Human Hair wigs still have to undergo a process to remove the cuticle slightly. Using a pantin/ or Dove shampoo will lift this cuticle, and a snarly mess is what you will be left with.
You should be able to get products for wigs at a reasonable price. (once again, I can get you in contact with people for this.)

Good luck...and I am always avaliable for questions!

Lauren reguarding the liquid medical adhesive we use that as well as other forms of adhesive to attach hairpeices, not wigs, but its true you can sleep and shower with this adhesive and it should last for 6 to 8 weeks.

Redd is cutting my wigs and underhair pieces now in New York City at Mark Garrison salon. Send me a message for the code to get special discounts by different stylists including Redd at this salon.

I get most wigs cut at least 4 times...every 6 months or so. I like change. I start long-ish and just keep getting them restyled and recolored as fashions and mood changes. Personally, can't imagine looking exactly the same month after month, year after year. It was never me to be in the same hairstyle all the time so wigs are no different. Go with who you are!

Hey.. Just wondering if anyone has heard of liquid medical adhesive for your hairpieces. Apparently, once you apply it your piece is supposed to stay on your head for a few months, and you can shower and sleep with it. Has anyone heard about this? Also is anyone familiar with Hair Club? Thanks

Hi, I live in Erie, PA and I wear a full scalp vacuum prosthesis from Freedom Hair of New Zealand...my long time hair stylist and friend, Greg Sears at Topic Salon in Erie has cut, styled and highlighted all of mine and he is fabulous. He has known me for many years...long before the AU and knows how I like to wear my hair. I have also had him cut several wigs which I keep on hand for emergency use. Once you wear a vacuum prosthesis, I can tell you, you will never want to wear a wig again. Mine has given me back my self confidence...I swim, dive and snorkel with it and never have to worry about it slipping or falling off. They are pricey but worth every single penny...I save for mine like I would for a Christmas club at the bank! Debbi Fuller is my contact and she is awesome!

The haircut is probably the most important aspect of wearing a wig. It is the foundation of the hairstyle. When the style comes, the haircut takes over, so it has to be perfect. With 40 years experience with wigs, we at Joseph Paris Naturally, have the knowledge of cutting wigs. Especially, to remove the bulk, because wigs have too much hair, making them look unnatural. Please visit my websites to see the most undetectable wig designs ever developed; www.yourhairx.com and www.josephparis.com.
