Hi Ray, my heart goes out to you & your daughter!! My hair started to fall out when I was 12 (I'm now 34yrs) there are some awesome wig suppliers & options in NZ& online, it's always best if you can try before you buy!! There is government funding for wigs also so make sure to utelise that! There are a few things happening this year with the NZ Alopecia conference happening in Christchurch 21st Oct & international Alopecia awareness day 5th August!! for more info on whats happening around you can check out: or

Hi. Mum of teen daughter just diagnised with AA. She is being so blimmin strong about it. But i cant help fear for her. Its only been a few weeks. Shes finishing a round of corticos and will start cream after. Its not lookling like its going to be saved. And well i was just wondering if anyone had any advice for an 11yr old girl trying to navigate around this.

Hi MummyWendy, I took my daughter to Oz a couple of years ago.  Her passport photo was when she was little and had a full head of hair.  When we went she had no hair, eyebrows or eyelashes and was wearing a beanie.  The customs person asked her to remove her beanie.  I explained why she was wearing it and they just asked her to pull it back so they could see all of her face - they were really good both ways.  I didn't have any issues.  Hope you have the same experience.  Cheers Kelly

I wondered if anyone has any experience of travelling through Customs in Australia or New Zealand with alopecia. My daughter's passport photo was taken a couple of years ago before her hair fell out. However, we are travelling from NZ to OZ soon and she has chosen to travel without her wig. I just had a terrible vision of being stopped at customs and them not believing her identity! If anyone has any experience or advice I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

I have no idea if this is the right place to post this but I have two Jon Renau wigs for sale. The Brooklyn which has been worn maybe 4-5 times and the Victoria which has never been worn (tags still attached, still in box). I'm pretty open to reasonable offers. Victoria is shade 4 (dark brown) and I think Brooklyn is 4/33 (dark brown with subtle red highlights). If you're interested email me at and I'll send photos/more info. Thanks!

Hi Judy, bit of late reply as I only come on here when i'm shedding hair. I'm a Wellingtonian (Porirua), 25 male. I have Areata, so lose patches of hair, eyebrows, some body hair but have most of it at the moment

Hi - I have just joined the New Zealand Alopecians Group albeit I have been a member of  Alopecia World for some time.  I lost all my hair (Alopecia Universalis) in 2008 over the course of a couple of months.  Every now and then I get little bits come back and at the moment I have eyelashes, which is a very strange feeling.

I am a Wellington lass and would like to know if there are any bods out there in the Wellington/Hutt area with the same condition.

I wear wigs for the most part, which I got from the government assistance and I have to say the lady that makes them (in Lower Hutt opposite Waterloo Railway Station) does an excellent job.  Especially the latest one I got last year for my daughter's wedding.

My aim is to be bold, and go to the shops without a wig.  I wear a scarf if it is really hot or a bandana when I go to the gym.

Would love to hear from someone local.

Happy new year to everyone.
