Hello Ladies

In January I cut my hair short, it is naturally curly, this enabled me to just fluff it up a bit and it covered y receeding hairline quite nicely. I have lost about 1 inch at the front hairline and 1.5 inches at my temples. I have grown my hair but I am unable to style it in a way that I like. If I tong it straight my hair is so fine on top it doesn't look groomed. I used to wear it back off my face in a headband sometimes, my hairline means I can no longer wear it like this. Every day is now a 'bad hair day'. My friends think my hair looks OK but I can't achieve a well groomed image any more. My hair isn't really in any particular style.

I have decided that since I have purchased a couple of wigs, I have worn each wig once, I will start wearing a nice wig in January. I have taken 5 weeks off work. I figure my colleauges will then just perceive me as having changed my hairstyle during my time off work. I have one wig that is similar to a hairstyle, jaw length bob, that I have worn several times in the past. I won't look like a new me it is going back to a previous hairstyle I have worn so I am hoping that I will not look too different.

I need to look nice for my confidence and I don't look my best at the momemnt. I thought I would only go into a wig when I lost a lot more hair but even with relatively little hair loss I am feeling very tatty looking.

Love to you all.

You have the same amount of loss as I have - maybe I have a little more on the right side. Where did you get the bob wig? - did you get it cut by anyone after you bought it? My hair is bobbed too, but straight, not curly. I believe Trevor Sorbie has a great interest in cutting wigs (google). I can see that it is more difficult for you than most, since appearance is important for your job.

Hi MairiM, I purchased 2 bob wigs. One with a fringe, I got it cut at Shepperton Wig Salon, they are on that Trevor Sorbie website, I bought the wig online. The wig I am wearing in my photo I have not cut, again I purchased it online from a UK site. It is a Jon Renau wig called Ignite in colour number 4. Quite a few of my colleauges to be honest have 'enhanced' their appearance with botox, a few facelifts and some other black girls do wear weaves so as long as I look nice the fact that I am using artifical help is not possibly so unusual than office based work I have done in the past. Seeing different colleauges every day means that people don't have a fixed idea of what I look like as well. I will check out the toppers that Pam has spoken about too.

Honestly, all I see is your beautiful smile. Having said that, I am sure that is not going to make you feel better (we always think everyone is just being nice) -- so I will tell you that I purchased something called a topper. It attaches to your head and really just gives you coverage in the front and on the sides -- where you need it most. Somewhere on this board is a photo of me wearing it. Most of my colleagues didn't even know I had it on. I wore it after I returned to work from summer break. The only reason why I didn't continue wearing it was because my scalp was so sensitive I could not deal with the clips and my classroom was not air conditioned and the temps were over 90 F. You can buy the topper made of human hair and it can match your own hair closely. It will blend in with your bio hair. It is a lot more comfy than wearing a wig (less hot). I bought the piece to my hairdresser who thinned it and styled it to match my style. I think you are smart about wearing it after a break -- it might be less noticeable.

Good luck with whatever you decide -- you are a beautiful woman -- hair or no hair!

Pam

Wig wearers say that you don't damage your real hair by wearing them, but I know that every time I clipped or unclipped the topper, I pulled on hair and my scalp. The topper will work for me when my scalp calms down. All of my friends say that I look exactly the same and you can't tell. The biggest issue though was the heat. Having another layer was making my head sweat and itch.

I had an appointment today at Trendco (in Brighton) which is a place specialising in wigs, hair pieces etc. You have an individual appointment which is nice and someone there goes through the options with you. I looked at hair pieces, and full head wigs as well as cream you put in your hair to deflect the light from showing the thinness in some areas. The lady showed me some pictures of people with fibrosing hairloss with a before and after picture and it was very interesting. They do bespoke hairpieces that fit an area of hairloss.
What I liked most of all was that there was absolutely no pressure to buy anything. I was shown all the things they could do to help, given some brochures and told I was welcome to phone or call in any time :o) The wigs were beautiful, infact I figure that with a wig my hair will look better than it ever has before, even before I started loseing it!

That's useful to know. Did someone else on this group not mention this place? I will have a look to see if they have branches, but might be desperate enough to go to Brighton! I didn't get notified of this post, but maybe because it wasn't a reply specifically for me. I've just seen a post by Debs (Oct 2) which I hadn't seen before either.

There are branches in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham as well as Brighton

Thanks. London easiest for me - but hope it doesn't come to that.

What are bespoke hair pieces?

Yes made to mesure. The lady in the shop said they are like a jigsaw so if you have a bald patch they make something to fit that exact area. When I looked at the photos of the ladies with fibrosing alopecia you couldn't tell where the real hair and the hairpiece met, they looked great. They were very expensive at about £1200 upwards!

Oh dear - and I should think you'd need two at least. I would need one for when my hair is just coloured and one for when it's a bit faded. I should think they'd only last 3 years max - anyone know how much the NHS will pay?

Wow. Do they have that in the States. How long do they last? How do you put them on? I am really interested in that! Do they come off every night or bonded on?
