I've been using squaric acid on my scalp for about 6 weeks(applying once or twice a week) and am having a hard time with the swelling, itching, and sores that have developed.

For anyone who has undergone this treatment, did you experience similar side effects and how did you stick it out? Any tips for preventing scratching or soothing the area?

Thanks so much!

HI Sam. My daughter just started this treatment. I am pretty sure there is a cream that your doctor should have prescribed to you to help with the itching and discomfort. You should ask him/her for it. I'm not sure what it is, as my daughter has had only one treatment, but her next visit we will ask for it as her scalp is just a little itchy now. She can deal with it now, but I will get the cream for it next week at our visit.

How often is your doctor applying this and at what strength? Maybe the strength is to large and he needs to decrease it? It sounds like he should, as I hear it shouldn't be this way.
Hi Gloria,
Thanks so much for your response. My doctor said she could prescribe something if the itching got really bad, but that it might counteract the SADBE since the goal is irritation; however, at this point I should probably ask her for something. We already decreased the strength (went from .2 to .1), but it didn't seem to make much of a difference.

My doctor lets me apply the SADBE myself as the hospital has a compounding pharmacy that can make it for me to take home. At first I applied it every 4 to 7 days but because of the irritation I've slacked off and it's been over 2 weeks. Hopefully, I can get up the courage to get back on schedule.

Wishing great results for your daughter!

Hi Samantha,

My daughter Samantha has been doing this treatment for 2 yrs and she has been wig free since June. She did have the side effects that you are experiencing. If you can stick with the treatment you should see some regrowth starting within 5-6 months. Samantha started her first treatment in Jan 08 and by the end of June she began to have the peach fuzz. A year later she had a buzz cut and a few small bald spots. Today, she still has 2 spots at the nape of her neck only. The hair seems to be thin in some places , but as it grows it is getting thicker. This summer her eyebrows starting to come in. If you view my page you can see some pictures of Sam at various stages of regrowth. Please email me anytime if you have any questions. Cindy
Hi Cindy,
I'll definitely send you an email. I know its different for everyone, but I'd love to hear how frequently you applied it before the regrowth started to occur and at what strength.

I've seen a few of your previous posts on Samantha's treatment and have been very encouraged that it is working for her. It's good to know that it took 5-6 months as my doctor said we should see something by three months (and I'm only a month away from that and nothing is happening yet)

Thanks so much!
Sam
Sam, my daughter just started it two weeks ago. We go every two weeks as of now. I will see then what my daughter's doctor wants to do next. It is a hard treatment but we are keeping positive and not giving up at all.

I see Cindy responded to your question...she is the expert at this! I have been contacting her continuously and she has helped me along! If you have any doubts or questions, please talk to her!
Thanks Gloria!!!

Sam, your doctor may not be entirely wrong. Sam had her skin test after Thanksgiving in 2007. In Jan 08 she had her first treatment. It was not until March we were on weekly treatments and then end of June fuzz and by Sept 08 a baby head of color hair ..If you have seen some of my previous posts I may have talked about her experience a bit. She has had a unique response to the treatment. Please feel free to email me with any questions...Cindy
