hi Pamela,

my head would hurt a bit just before more hair would fall out. not on the sides but up in the top on the crown. it would kind of feel like i had bumped it and felt a bit bruised. not like a basketball but a minor bump. and it would get kind of itchy, not a scratch itch but almost like i needed to massage it and it felt a bit raised, so when i massaged it it felt like i was kind of pushing the bruised bit back down flat if that makes sense. and that felt better but not a great deal i'm afraid, and didnt stop the loss. your poor daughter. i cant imagine how devastated she must be. just as an aside, i also had a very large bald patch when i was 10 or 11, i had cortisone injections at the time and it completely cleared up, never to reappear until now and i am 37. just to give you some hope for her, although i hope it isn't false hope. but i think its easier to deal with at 37 than it would be at 10. best of luck to you and her. nat

My head didn't hurt, but it tingled a lot! I remember working with a client and I just felt this intense tingling while we were talking! That night, a clump of hair fell out right where I tingled. The same thing happened with my eyelashes. I wondered why my right eye would twitch and, sure enough, the eyelashes fell out shortly after.

The same thing is happening to me. My head hurts right before the hair falls out. It stings and feels bruised. It also feels real course to the touch. I was just diagnosed with AA in September, 2009. I have been putting bags of frozen peas on my head and it seem to help with the pain a little.

I have one large spot on top of my head and 4 smaller ones on the sides, on top of my head seems to be sore alot and I have alot of itching and burning all over my head.

Hi Pamela,
My head hurt when my fell out too.
Mine felt like when you have a tight pony tail and then you let the hair down and all that tension from the tightness of the pony tail. Kinda funny way to discribe it.
Even now sometimes when I wear my wig all day when I take it off it fells like my glands on the back of my head hurt.
I feel ike it swells and I have to take that wig off and rub it.
I know how she if feeling.
Mine actually started about 20 years ago when I first started my job.
I had one spot in the back.
Its strange how it works.
Until now I haven't had any more changes until last yr.
Thats when I lost it all.
But I had alot of stress in my life too.
But I know I will make it.
God has his plan for me and I accept what ever he gives me.
I know it has to be hard for the little ones.
I pray everyday that someday the will have a cure for it.
Keep reminding your daughter everyday that she is so beautiful.
And there might be some one on here her age that she could be friends with.
Because it does help talking to other people that have gone through what you are going through.
Just someone to talk about it.
It sure has helped knowing there is someone that knows what I am going through.

everyones experiance seems to be a little different. having said this, im led to believe alopecia is, for most, as it is for me, painless. irritation, amoungst other things, may indicate fungal alopecia, just something to be aware of next time you see the derm :-)

Hi Pamela, actually I had very severe pain and burning on my scalp(but that doesn't mean it will happen to your daughter).
The pain lasted about ten years for me, but has now finally subsided. I concluded that it just may be part of the whole autoimmune process. :)

Most of the time it is painless. In very chronic times it hurts, like after you take your hair out of too tight pony tail. Sometimes it hurt a lot. Try advil. It passes when the hair falls out unfortunately.
