My 7-year-old son was just diagnosed with alopecia areata. I have been reading some on the internet about some people having success with a gluten-free diet. Has anyone here tried it and been successful with hair regrowth?

How is the gluten free diet going Holly?

There was an anecdotal paper that came out of Italy, where a doctor saw connection between Celiac and alopecia areata. A girl who had alopecia was place on a gluten free diet, and within 6 months regrew her hair.

Celiac disease and alopecia areata: report of a new association.

But I don't think the connection between coelica and alopecia areata was really understood. I just saw this paper recently on calcipotriol, an ointment that has "a strong vitamin D analog," used by psoriasis patients.

Successful Treatment of Alopecia Areata with Topical Calcipotriol

For people with coeliac the gluten causes the immune system to produce antibodies that attack the small bowel containing villi, the villi atrophies and degrades the villi's ability to absorb fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin D. So this might be one reason why the calcipotriol works for those patients.
