Feeling very alone and lost
i just wish i had someone in my life that can teach me about wigs and things of that sort because i need to start wearing one soon. I just feel so lost and alone, i wish no one else had to go through this but i wish there was some one who can help me. I dont anything about wigs, its so overwhelming and seems so complicated. My hair is really thing and i dont have much of it left.

It was trial and error for me, Ana, and unfortunately I wasted a good deal of money in the process. They are all different and it will require a little experimentation on your part. I would go into the whole thing with an open mind and no expectations. What you THINK you may want (style/color/etc) may not be what you end up with. Start with reasonably priced, attractive synthetics first until you get used to the concept and feel of a wig, then branch out when you're more comfortable.
As an aside, when I first started wigs, I used to "wrap" whatever hair I had left around my head with pins then put the wig over that. After a while, that was a nuisance, so I just cut it short all over. I still have goofy hair on my head, and am not ready to shave, so I put a little nylon wig cap on and then my wig.

That is why we are here. My daughter wears swiss lace wigs with a silk top. I spent $1400- $1800 for them at first but I have found them on the internet for $400-$500. She attaches them with SuperTape around the edges and changes them every 2-3 days. She can shower with them on. They last about 6 months but she sleeps in them. See if you can find a hairdresser in your area that can help with cut and color. If you message me I will give you the sites. They do not want us to post links on AW. You are not alone. My daughter is having a blast at college and people stop her to compliment her hair.

I remember having to buy my first wig and wishing I had someone knowledgeable to go with me!
What I did was go to a wig store so I could talk to the wig lady about wigs. I ended up buying a $400 Raquel Welch wig which I could have bought online for half that price. AND it was very poor quality and I couldn't even wear it after a few weeks. Since then, I've bought my wigs online. I have always loved the Louis Ferre wigs and then, with my last order, it arrived cut up to my ears instead of my collarbone, and I was very disappointed. It really is hit or miss. You might want to scroll through some profiles and see what wigs you like and ask where they got them! I've done that before. My next wig will be an Amore wig, and that is because a fellow AW member recommended that brand.

Just do your best to work out what your needs are. Buying a hairpiece can be a very emotionally taxing time, so do your best to think logically. Emotional buys can be upsetting in the end.
I remember when I first started looking for my daughter I soon became a little overwhelmed with what I should or shouldn't be doing for her. In the end I listened, researched as much as possible, then worked out her needs in a hairpiece and went forward. I have never looked back as the choice I made was one that suited her and has done for the last 8 years.
People decide on different types of hairpieces for many reasons, their is no wrong or right here there is only your own needs.
Do your best to have fun while investigating as much as I wish this wasn't happening to you (sadly) it is, so finding some joy in the process may be helpful.

My advice is more about how to start feeling comfortable wearing a wig. First of all when you have tried loads of wigs and find one you like, practice wearing it for small amounts of time every day, increasing the time gradually, just do this in the house at first if you like and then progress to outside! I used to walk to the end of my road and back, and then progressed to a quick trip to the shop etc, you get the idea anyway. Eventually in your own time you can build up loads of different experiences whilst wearing a wig, and the more things you try the better.
Also taking pictures of yourself in a wig can help you decide if you like one or not, sometimes a picture gives you a different view on things. Even taking pictures of yourself can build your confidence with the wig, especially when you see how great your new "hair" looks!
Last but by no means least, when you are out and about and lots of people compliment you on your great hairstyle, hold your head up high, give a big smile, say thanks you, and enjoy the feeling!

My daughter lost all of her hair in a 2 week period her senior year in highschool. She was trying to hide it with scarves and headbands but it wasn't working. I had a partial wig on hand from a previous episode of alopecia. She came home from school and the bald spots were showing and I told her we had to go to the wig place that night. She was so upset but the guy colored and styled it and made it look like her hair. He clipped it on and she rode home silently. She called her boyfriend and he came straight over from basketball practice all sweaty. He gave her a hug and told her she looked great and that he would see her at the locker tomorrow. I was so grateful to him for that. She has worn her wigs proudly and not looked back. I think the first day is the hardest.

I agree with a lot of the tips given by these ladies. it def. is a lot of trial and error. i've had alopecia since I was 8 (I'm now 18) so my first wig was from wigs for kids which is a foundation that donates wigs. my father is located I'm CA and when I went to visit him one summer he took me to a wig store called his&hers where I had a great experience and walked out with about 3/4 new wigs. that place was cool because you can request a privite room (bring someone you trust and someone tht makes you comfortable) and pic out all the wigs you want to try on and they bring it to your room. they're also affordable. my main wig is from there.. however, I no longer wear my wigs out of the package because my hair stylist works magic on them. recently I have switched to try my first lace front and it's curly like my natural hair was! anyway, once you get the hang of it and discover what you like, it really becomes fun! don't feel alone hun. you can message me if you want to talk (: or if you want any more info. hope you make your wig search as enjoyable as possible. and just think, so Manu fabulous celebrities hardly go natural nowadays, so rock it girl!!!
