Hi Heather,

The doctor said I had Alopecia Areta, but I now think this is diffuse alopecia areata. I return to the doctor on friday 2/4/11, I have do have spots in my head. I wonder if I have both? Is one worse then the other?
Hi Angie, diffuse alopecia areata is hair loss from all over the head....not usually any spots.
Well I guess I have them both. I lost hair all over, thinning and I have spots.
Hi Angie/heather,

I am quite sure I have both too, it is harder to tell due to my age (natural onset of male pattern baldness would be happening now anyway, it's just accelerated and been lost much faster than "normal")
And I guess it's even harder to compare my case to yours becuase I'm male too!

Still for what it's worth, 5 months ago I had a robust head of hair. Ok, so it was all grey but still, it was there for all to see :)
I had been getting Areata on and off for a year or two.
I began training (exercising a lot) and within 2 months all of my crown hair had fallen out.

Which events from the above sequence are co-incidental I don't know.

Currently I have stopped shedding (hair loss was happening every day - I would see 50+ hair on my pillows and 50+ in the shower every day) and my Wife believes my hair loss is now not as apparent on my crown.

I'm still getting patches at the back and sides though....if I could just synchronise the hair growth ;)

Hope this helps you somewhat, I do think you can have AA and Diffuse Hair loss at the same time!
PS Google Telogen Effluvium - it's the technical name for Diffuse Haor loss. Lots of info out there.

PPS Stay well and upbeat!

PPPS @Heather Bloom - what a beautiful name! Your parents chose well :)
Hey Greg, I think you may be misunderstanding...diffuse alopecia areata is not telogen effluvium, it is just another form of alopecia areata.
Hi Heather - I think you are right. I was confusing the two (they present in the same way right?). I just remembered TE from my own research when I was watching my hair beating a hasty retreat :) Either way, I lost my hair in a "diffuse" way on the top and in patchy spots around the back and sides. My shedding has since stopped.

Hopefully things will work out for you.
I started with spots, than a quarter of the top started thinning and one side. It stopped shedding as well. The diffuse hair is growing and fulling in.The spots are also growing, but very slow. The hair is getting thinker, but I think this happened before. I keep it cut low, like a man's cut. I cut it really low, using a 2" blade. It growing to a small afro now, can't cover the spots, but I'm hopeful
Did either of you have texture or color change in your hair? My seems to break very easily? My hair is also changing in color...from dark brown to a reddish
Dark grey to almost white, in 2-3 months.
Apparently all the coloured stuff (well, the stuff that had "some" colour left) was falling out, leaving the white hair that was backfilling.
Now all I have is the white stuff. Thin and patchy but oh so white :)
The lads have taken to calling me Leslie Nielson (RIP Leslie) from the Naked Gun movies.
Red hair is nice. I would say that though, I'm Irish.
No white hair for me, I heard many say this.
When My hair started falling out in 2009,it changed it texture. It was like knotting up. i'm African American. It was breaking off very easy. One time a bunch pulled out, like a tree from the ground. No, my color is not changing, All my new growth is black, with the correct texture. The hair in the spots are growing very slow, and are black. I see grey hair growing, a few hairs, everything eles is gray. The place were the hair pulled out is growing in gray. My hair on the edges were graying, prior to AA.
Me too !!
Guess we're a mixed breed.
