My sister visited for Memorial Day Weekend. Its been very hot and one evening we decided on going out for ice cream.

My sister, my husband and I got in the car and drove to a local ice cream place. We ate our respective ice creams at one of the tables outside of the establishment. I was out without a hat, scarf; it was very hot. I often forget that I no longer have hair. I feel comfortable just being out, in the world, bald.

As we proceeded to get back in the car, I hear a kids voice yelling "Mom, Mom, look, look she's bald...." I turned around and responded "yeah, Mom, look, look, I'm bald". All they could do was stare.

I usually handle this well; I usually just smile and wave. But this time I was thoroughly pissed. When I looked at the "Mom", she looked like she weighed 800 pounds, sitting in the car, behind the wheel, never having gotten out, her huge double ice cream sundae taken to her. One would think "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones". Someone who looks like she does I would think would have taught her kids not to single anyone out; I'll bet she gets pointed at, no doubt.

My husband and sister told me to ignore ignorance; we drove away. I got over it quickly.

Yes, the world can be a strange place.

Onward and upward.

I understand why u would be pissed, same thing happened to me at a beauty supply lol, the little girl was telling another little girl that I was bald. I ignored it because hey lets be honest here,if you don't feel like being all nice why pretend?? Its really annoying when people don't teach their children manners, them being children isnt really an excuse

The more lasting , significant and postitive question would be ..... What kind of ice cream did you get ..and was it good ..??? Hmmm ???

What a bummer. I’ve been there before that is for sure, many times. One such family with feral kids lived (fortunately briefly) in our apartment block. They are so annoying, but really you can’t do anything in situations like this. At the end of the day though, they embarrass themselves & not you.

Hi Lili

I wanted to add something to my previous comment, but before I do I will stress that this IS NOT intended to cause any alarm. The comments relate to a case in the UK a few years ago, and it is an example of just how extreme people’s reactions can be when they come across people whose appearance they do not appear of. It makes me feel upset writing about it now.
A young gothic woman was murdered, purely because of her appearance. She and her boyfriend had been sitting on a park bench minding their own business. The boyfriend was attacked by a group of drunken thugs without warning. The woman tried to shield her boyfriend from the blows, and they ended up attacking her. She died in hospital a few days later. They were all caught and jailed, but as a result of this 1 life was lost and other lives ruined.
I am certain that you will never suffer any physical abuse just for being bald. I just felt prompted to mention it, to show just how extreme reactions can sometimes be. I feel ashamed that this occurred in the part of England that I come from – although I hasten to add that I’ve had no problems of any kind for man years.
