A friend of mine recently emailed me asking me what I thought of permanent eyeline and eyebrows for a guy.
For me, it isn't a choice I've ever thought of - I have been hairless in public sine 1996 when all my hair finally all fell out for good and I REALLY like being a hairless human.
I do know a handful of alopecians who've had their eyebrows and eyelines done. I know some girls who have shaved their eyebrows shaved off and not regrown back, and they Henna them every so often when they get bored of having to draw them in every other day.
I know some punk rockers with eyebrows tattooed in red flames and green dots. I have seen some goths on weekends add curly cues in deep black... there are all types of ways to highlight a blank space.
If a guy is thinking of going permanent, I would suggest practicing first. Use a light brown eye pencil to draw in your eyebrows. Practice with a brush stroke effect if you want a more "natural" brow, use a line and draw it in with different thickness levels. Look at magazines, and I would even suggest going to a trendy salon or visit with a makeup artist at a MAC counter - they have a lot of ideas and it wouldn't make you uncomfortable in that trendy of an environment. They also have a huge array of eye pencil colours to choose from and the money does go to a good cause as well.
The drawback with eye pencils - it may tend to smudge during the day, but it isn't permanent and you can test your friends and the public's reaction to see if it is something you want to go ahead with or not.
If you want, go one step further and purchase a Henna kit. Henna will fade after a week or so, so if you feel that after a straight week of having an eyebrow is something you want more permanent, then go ahead with the permanent tattoo route.
But try to remember that a permanent eyeliner is PAINFUL to remove, and can even disturb your eye if you want it removed down the road. And a little expensive. And a little complicated.
But a lot of groovy alopecians do have permanent eyebrows and eyelines and they still have that awesome gusto for life!
But to each his own. I still say, OWN your Alopecia. You are unique because you are you and you are not a clone.
Have a groovy day, and cheers from Montreal my friends!
