I did it! I went out to Panera with my 28 yr old daughter with nothing on my head! We had a bad storm and I had on my really good wig today. So I decided just to go in "topless". And life went on. The girl behind the counter looked a little wide eyed at me but I just looked straight into her eyes and gave my warmest smile. She asked how I was doing and seemed stunned when I said, "I'm doing great, how about you?" I do think I look better with hair, but I also think I look better with makeup. I think I look better in a little black dress than I do in sweats. But I want the freedom to choose what I put on my body on my face and yes on my head depending on the occasion. If more of us venture out in public just as God made us then it won't be such a big deal. What a victorious day for me. I will try this again sometime. I'm sure some sweltering days over the summer months will be a perfect day to bare my beautiful bald head. Never ever thought I would get to this level of acceptance of my alopecia.

Hi, Brigid - I read and enjoyed all 3 of your latest posts. I was sitting here at my laptop cheering! :-) I just want to say: Good for you!  (As you can see by my profile pic, it is not me who has Alopecia, but my 6 yr old granddaughter - My Lil Bald Beauty! <3 )

Oh, and if you're looking for a great head cover for beach or pool, I highly recommend nammuhats.com  They are not waterproof, but are UV protective, comfortable... and they STAY ON while swimming or diving. Much cuter than the usual swim caps, too  ;-)

Hi Lori-akaMimi.  Thanks for your kind words.  Your granddaughter's tattoo looks really cool! It's henna right?  And btw, I have ordered a nammuhat for when I swim this summer.  I'd go with nothing but I'm very prone to sunburn and even if indoor I think the chlorine might irritate my scalp.  I still shave the back and sides about once a week.  The entire top of my head doesn't grow any hair.  But the scalp is a little sensitive.  so I'm thinking this hat will work really well.  thanks again!

Hey, Brigid! That tattoo was actually one of those kid's type that you press on with water. She loved the idea! She had just had us shave off what little hair she had left. Shaving was her decision. When it was finished, she declared, "I am a strong kid! and I like my bald head! I AM ME!"  This is one courageous, amazing, inspiring kid! As for her scalp, I've been using Aveeno lotion, and it seems to soothe the sensitivity and fend off dryness. There is also an SPF 15 Aveeno lotion. Let me know how the Nammu works for you... Enjoy your day!
