I grew up in Michigan, and my great dermatologist, Neldagae Chisa, still has a practice in the North Woodward area of the northern Detroit suburbs. She was very gentle. Please look her up. My alopecia was from ages 10-20 while in Michigan, so I knew her many years ago.

Look on this site for the Michigan group under "GROUPS" above. You and your son might want to attend their events to meet more people!

Football games and concerts can be attended in head coverings like beanies, and your son can always start his college search to keep his mind on the future. Let me know what part of the state you are in.

{{{{HUGS}}}}} Tonya, I have a 14 year old son with alopecia. Last Dec/Jan he basically lost all his scalp hair and now barely has any eyebrows and eyelashes. It has been a VERY emotional 9 months for us. I wish I had some great encouragaing words to share. We take it one day at a time. We live in Ohio and have many relatives in Michigan (my husband is from MI). You are not alone and either is your son - this site has been so comforting and insightful for me. I get hope, comfort, and encouragement from reading others posts and wisdom.

I would like to emphasize on what Tallgirl said, "...keep his mind on the future." It is an extremly competitive job market in America and especially in Michigan right now. So it is very very important for him to get a good education.

You are definitely not alone, nor is your son. This site is great, even if you just read read through blogs and don't post a lot. I'm sending virtual hugs to you both.

Google Michigan September Events for places to take your son and his friends. You have coffee with a friend who comes along, and the boys walk around the event and keep in touch by cell phone until meals. His friends will love it if you buy the meals. My parents hosted many gatherings with sloppy-joes and datebars during my alopecia teen years at the house, so I never felt like I was friendless. They drove me to visit camp friends an hour away, and got to know the other parents while I visited, or just picked me up the next day. I got to see new schools and cities, which later fueled my independence and love of travel. This was all in Michigan.
