I got a wig a few weeks ago.  I spent $550 on it.  It is synthetic.  I like it, but to me it looks so fake.  I've worn it about 5 times now and I have a hard time getting the part right.  I feel like I have a melon on my head.  I still have a lot of my own hair left. I am losing it in top middle, on the sides and at the crown.  I don't know it that's what is making me feel like a melon head or not.  Also, I don't feel like I can do a lot with it (like putting the bangs back) without it looking fake.  It just doesn't look totally like me.  Did anyone else experience these feelings when wearing wigs in the beginning?  Is this still part of the acceptance piece of all of this?  How long did it take any of you to feel comfortable?

Thanks,

Jay Jay

Thank you both for your responses.  I was out of town for the first 2 weeks of October and was unable to get back on here.

I was on vacation and wore my wig each night I went out.  Some days I thought I looked ok, then other days I hated it.  It also hurts after wearing it for a long period of time.  I was able to find a wig I liked in Florida that was half the cost.  I like it too, but again, I have good days and bad days.  Both wigs are for long hair.  It's hard for me to go short because I've always had long hair.  I hated my hair when I had to cut it short to try to make it look like I had "volume".  I think my next one will be a little shorter just to try.  What is hard is wearing it in the heat.  I live in Arizona.  Summer is brutal here with 115+ temperatures.  I also wore my wig when I was in Florida at Disney World with temps in the 90's.  That was hard too.  What do you do with your hair on days you just don't want to wear a wig?  Right now I am buying a lot of thick headbands that covers the back of my head.  It just gets so depressing.  I hate to look at myself in the mirror any more.  I think I will feel better when I get this whole wig thing mastered.  I need to look for additional salons near by.  The salon I went to was in Scottsdale in an over-priced area.

I do use hair clips, which helps a lot.  I am used to running my hands through my hair and that is a tough habit to break.  I may try to get my first wig thinned out some more.

Thank you for your advice :)

Hi Jay Jay!

I used to wear wigs when I was younger, not because I had Alopecia, but because I damaged my scalp from chemical perms. I wore the kind of wigs that allowed my head to breathe. Back in those days, they didn't have a lot of selection of wigs that looked natural. But today, they have some amazing wigs--with baby hair and all!

My recommendation is to purchase a high quality "synthetic wig" unit that is moderately priced around $50- $150. Get the feel for it. Make sure you measure your head so that you get the proper sized cap. Pick a complementary color. Make sure the cap is breathable and that the density of hair is natural. I've found that 120-130 density is medium thick and is more natural looking. This way it won't have that 'wiggy' look. You know what I mean?

There are some awesome How-To tutorials on YouTube that show you how to make your wig look natural. I would master wearing a moderate synthetic wig first, then "invest" in a Human hair wig unit. When I say invest, I don't mean spending thousands of dollars. You can find some beautiful high quality human hair wigs out there without breaking the bank! In my opinion, spending anywhere between $300- $800 is a good enough "investment."

The wig business is a Big business and a lot of people/brands are rapping people financially because they know that when you're vulnerable, there is no amount of money that you wouldn't spend, just to feel better about yourself.

I can share a website that has a nice selection of beautiful and affordable wigs--human hair and synthetic https://store.naturallyyoursboutique.com/collections/human-hair-wigs take a look at these selections. Let me know what you think.

I hope this helps Jay Jay~

Peace.

P.S.If you are a man, I'm sorry that the online store doesn't have a selection for men, but browse anyway. You never know, they just might carry some soon. :-)

Thank you so much for input.  I greatly appreciate it. I have since been able to find another synthetic wig for half the cost and I ordered another one even less than the 2nd one.  I wasn't sure what density was good either so I am also appreciative for that tip.  I am going to check out the site now.  Thank you!
