Wig Wearing Women - Stand Tall!!

I feel so compelled to write this message to all of you bald women who choose to wear wigs. I don't mean to be controversial or engage in debate because aren't we all one family, one community of support? We are ALL in the same boat. First, to you ladies who go bald in public, I appreciate and thank you for being true to what you think is right for you. Because isn't that REALLY what it's about - To Thine Own Self Be True.

But that said, shouldn't we all be accepting each other for… Continue

keeping my noggin warm Part 2

So I figured I should add an update since wearing my first sleep cap. I LOVE IT! I can keep my apartment at arctic temps and still be warm while I'm sleeping. I enjoy wearing it while I'm staying in for the day too. It makes a much bigger difference than I would have expected. I also bought my very first hat - not just first Alopecia hat but first hat ever. It's made for hair loss so it fits my entire head down to my neck. It's so cute. I'm actually enjoying it while wearing my wig - it gives… Continue

keeping my noggin warm....

Hi...this isn't nearly as earth shattering or dramatic a post as some of my others, but I'm excited about my most recent alopecia realization. Sleep caps! Yes, I'm probably the last alopecian to know they exist. But I was laying in my bed a couple nights ago, a little cold - it does get a bit nippy in Phoenix in the winter believe it or not. Oh, well, I also didn't want to turn on my heat yet either as I'm saving money leaving it off right!!! I was thinking as I was laying there that it would… Continue

I KNEW I WOULD BE OK

So I wrote back in April about my lifestory - especially about how much I struggled with my self esteem even up to then regarding being a bald female. What a rough road it has been. And yet I also wrote about some changes like the courage it took for me to even write my story. I posted pics of myself bald on this site a couple months ago and that was another huge step for me - out there for the world to see! I even posted a link to AW on my Facebook profile. Really putting myself out there -… Continue

More encouraging registry information...

Hi guys, if you've read all these posts, you know that there has been some discussion about the purpose of the National Alopecia Areata Registry and how our information and blood samples will be used. I went back and read more carefully myself on the MD Anderson site.

My purpose in posting this particular blog is not to cause a reaction or upset anyone who may disagree with what I am writing. I just feel that there is signifcant reason to believe that the registry will be doing…

Hope and optimism are powerful teammates

Hi everyone, I should clarify what I wrote in my previous blog. I got way ahead of myself and skipped over details that I feel it is only right to share with you. The Alopecia Registry is not directly researching for a cure. They are only data collecting at this point. I feel, however, that without participation, no progress can be made in our cause. And that progress can possibly lead to a cure.

I spoke with my rep at MD Anderson today. She stated that answers I provide on their… Continue

Help find the cure

Have you registered on the Alopecia Registry? http://www.mdanderson.org/departments/alopecia/

It will help MD Anderson with research on the exact causes for Alopecia. It is also possible that you will be asked to go to level 2 and actually partcipate in a research study. I was surprised when I was asked to participate in the research. I am now in that process and would appreciate your good thoughts and prayers for it to go smoothly. I must fill out paperwork, visit a dermatologist and get… Continue

Something magic happens everyday!

I am so amazed by what is happening in my life right now...some passions and hopes that have been unfulfilled for many years are starting to come true one after the other. One of them happened today, and all thanks to AW. We had our first support group meeting here in the Phoenix area. I guess there was a meeting many years back that fizzled out. But I have been here 7 years and looked a few times in the past 7 years and there has not been one.

Five of us ladies came and we had a…

I am not alone!

It's so funny how God works - everything has its own time and only He knows when the time is right. God comes along and says "OK, you're ready to receive this change and grow." I don't always want these changes. And sometimes, I have been praying for them for years and wondered why they were taking so long to happen. My journey from AA to AU started at four. Bald spots and thinning were a part of my life pretty much every spring of my childhood. I had no idea though, that ALL the hair on my… Continue
