First time I've lost it in response to the cancer question

I'm feeling guilty today because of something I did last night. I was at an outdoor concert, wearing one of my Turkish scarves because it was cool.

A pleasant woman about my age was introduced to me by mutual friends. The FIRST words out of her mouth were: "I was where you are." Instead of responding with my usual "Oh, I don't have cancer, I have alopecia areata, etc..." I calmly said: "And where do you think I am?"

She was a little taken aback, and said that she assumed I… Continue

Beautiful Bald Woman on Recent 30 Rock Episode

If you have the most recent 30 Rock episode on DVR or taped, (or can watch it online) take a look at the very last scene. There is a choir singing at a wedding, groovin' on the 30 Rock Theme Song. It's at the very end of the episode (I think it may be the season finale). I just watched it for the first time last night.

There is a beautiful, totally bald woman in the middle of the choir! A couple of shots show her very well. There is no dialog, no explanation, and she's just a… Continue

What Do You Say To Curious Children?

So, last night my husband and I are having dinner on the outdoor patio of a nice restaurant. It was a beautiful San Diego evening, so I was bald when we came in, and stayed that way for the first part of the meal. As we sat down, I noticed three little girls at a nearby table staring at me and exclaiming to their mother. I'd guess the kids were about 5 or 6 years old. I ignored them, and eventually put on one of my Turkish scarves when it got cooler.

After awhile, the three girls… Continue

INTERNATIONAL ALOPECIA DAY - spread the word in other languages!

As many of you know, the name of our annual awareness and pride event was changed in May by vote of the National Bald Out Group. The event is now called "International Alopecia Day".

Because of the name change, I removed the second NBO video that I had made, and it's no longer on YouTube. So, the text is no longer available there. But, in case anyone else wants to translate the message into…

Roger Ebert is an inspiration - his words about coming to terms with his changed appearance

Film critic and author Roger Ebert appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show today. He's been battling thyroid cancer since 2002, and has had his entire jaw removed and has endured multiple surgeries and attempts to reconstruct his jaw. He can no longer eat, drink or talk, but he continues to write reviews and blogs. A full-page photo of him as he looks now recently appeared in an Esquire magazine article.

Besides the example he sets for everyone in dealing with adversity and…

Head Jewels

Many of us aspire to be more like our wonderful AW role model, Crowned Regal. Last night I tried a little bit of "royalty" on my head - I wore some glue-on head jewels for the first time. I bought a kit online last year from a company that supports women with hair loss due to cancer, called "Crown Jewels", but I hadn't found the right moment to try the look.

For my first attempt at head decoration, I chose all-red jewels and wore them to a Valentine's Day folk dance party. I…

Alopecian Adventures in Antarctica and Argentina

I just returned from a trip that my husband and I have been planning for a long time. I was out of Internet contact for most of the time, and I missed the AW community. I'd like to share a few moments from the trip, particularly some that involved my baldness. I've posted one photo on my page, and will probably put some more up eventually, as well as videos on YouTube of the wildlife.

Yesterday was the two-year anniversary of my shaving my head. I've been publicly "out" as a bald… Continue

Gail Porter in recent news stories - what a role model!

This is a nice interview with Gail from Nov. 5, 2009, with a lot of positive comments about dealing with alopecia areata:

A nice experience at the gym - Rock the bald look, get jewelry from strangers

I had a really nice experience today at the gym that I want to share. I was wearing my tank top that I had made on Cafe Press. On the front it says: "Yes, I'm bald...get over it." On the back it says: "No hair. No problem." As usual, my bald head was uncovered. I was most of the way through my weight training.

A woman I don't know came up to me and took off her necklace and handed it to me. It's a beautiful, delicate silver piece. She told me that her sister is a jewelry designer,… Continue

Bye Bye Brows

Since I began regrowing eyebrows and lashes at the beginning of 2009 (after being AU for about a year), I've been telling myself not to get too emotionally attached to them. Though they never grew in completely, it's been really nice to have my bio-looking brows again, and all my friends have noticed and commented. The brows are visible in the Bald Lady Drumming photos I put up in August.

But now, the signs are clear: I haven't had to pluck areas underneath the brows for a few weeks,… Continue

Two Alopecians walk into a doctor's office...

Sounds like a bad comedian's joke - "Two Alopecians walk into a bar...." But, for the first time, I actually found myself in public place with an Alopecian I didn't know.

We first saw each other in the Lab part of the hospital (I was in for a blood test). I thought he might have Alopecia. He was about my age, very fit looking, and very bald with an all-over-his-head tan. If he had eyebrows, they weren't very dark. I was, as usual, sitting there bald. Neither one of us said… Continue

Alopecia Areata magazine "Hoofdzaak" from the Netherlands

AW member Inez edits a beautiful magazine about alopecia areata, and she asked to use my blog post "Coming Out Bald at the Synagogue - What the Bible Says About Baldness", and some photos. I just received a copy of the magazine, and it's beautiful - full of articles and photos about alopecia and alopecians. I sure wish I read Dutch, though. We need a magazine like this in the US! There is also a photo of AW member Karina Louise in this issue. See photos on my page. Thanks, Inez - great work!

Amber Rose - Sort of bald look?

While reading a story about Kanye West's dis of that singer at the awards show, I saw this photo of his date, Amber Rose. Wikipedia says she sports a buzz cut that's dyed blonde, but she looks like she's going for a bald look here:

I want a new name for my variety of AA

I had AA for 7 years, then I progressed to AT - no scalp hair, but everything else still there. Then, it quickly went to AU. In the past few months, I've started growing hair again, but ONLY on my face. I have eyebrow patches, lashes in the center of my upper eyelids, nose hair, and peach fuzz in places on my cheeks and chin. But, there's not a single, tiny hair anywhere else on my scalp or body.

So, I think that there needs to be a name for when you have hair only from your eyebrows… Continue

Because I Have Alopecia, Something Wonderful Happened

After all the anger and tears and depression that I've come through to be where I am, something amazing and positive happened as a direct result of my losing all my hair!

I have a friend who is battling cancer, and she's having a very tough time physically and emotionally. She's undergoing chemo, and recently lost her beautiful hair. I had given her several of my Turkish scarves, but today when I called her, she started crying and asked me if I have a wig she could borrow. She's lost… Continue

Performed bald for the first time last night!

I'm a drummer with a couple of Balkan bands and since losing my hair, I've worn one of my Turkish scarves while performing (as shown on YouTube videos - search for "Dromia stoynoff"). Though I've gone folk dancing bald, I've never gotten up on a stage and performed without my scarf since I lost my hair. I just haven't been ready to be up in front of people on a stage, bald.

Last night I did it! It was warm, and I was working hard drumming with some visiting musicians, so I took off… Continue

Coming Out Bald at the Synagogue - What the Bible Says About Baldness

Hi everyone,

I want to share with you something I did this morning in front of the congregation at our synagogue. Though I go everywhere bald, one place I hadn't done so was at services at the temple. Every Saturday morning when we go, I've worn one of my scarves. Until this morning!

Today's reading from the Torah (Old Testament - Leviticus ch. 13) is about skin diseases, baldness, and treatment by the ancient priests in Israel. I couldn't pass up this opportunity to… Continue

Inspirational words from Michael J. Fox about his Parkinson's that apply to us, too

I heard Michael J. Fox speak a year ago. It was when I was just losing my hair and very depressed and angry. I came away from his talk feeling inspired and uplifted. When I saw him speak, he couldn't stand or sit still, and was constantly fighting his body's involuntary movements. The new TIME magazine (April 27, 2009 issue) has "10 Questions" with him. I'd like to share a few of the questions. Every time it says "Parkinson's disease", substitute "Alopecia":

Q: How do you keep your… Continue
