Hoping not to jinx it

Hello all,

It's been awhile since I've been on here...I have been growing my hair back since Feb 2011 and finally am just below chin length. It's kind of crazy that I'm not surprised when I look in the mirror anymore (it was quite the transition when I first put away my wig and attempted a pixie cut).

I guess I'm just scared-

I'm afraid to change anything- my diet, my shampoo, medications...anything that could cause a relapse.

I'm so spoiled with my hair now, but…

The life of a closeted alopecian

Dear all,

As dumb as this may sound, I wonder if I will ever get up the nerve to change my facebook picture. To backtrack, I am now on day twelve my new "pixie cut" post wig hairstyle with two 1.5 bald spots, one above my left ear and one on the ride side of my lower neck area. Thankfully I have a great hairstylist who styled it so that you can't tell, I am extremely thankful for her :)

To use my facebook picture simply as a symbol of my current mental state (and to… Continue

Beauty pageants evoke images of flawless women in amazing shape, perfectly made-up and coifed, right?

Yet one beauty queen vying for the Miss America title in Las Vegas this Saturday night has barely any hair on her head.

Kayla Martell, Miss Delaware, has been bald for half of her 22 years — she has alopecia areata, a rare condition that results in unexplained hair loss. But… Continue

The end or the beginning?

Dear all,

It appears that 24 will be the most memorable birthday of my life. I have been growing out my hair since February and finally decided to "take the plunge" with a pixie cut. Truthfully, had my long term best friend not been in town, I probably never would have gotten myself into the salon in the first place.

Something amazing happened. Even now, I look back astonished at my actions. As my stylist (who has been with me through two wigs) came out into the waiting… Continue

Regrowth - questions on biotin and thickening shampoos

Hey All,

I haven't been on here for awhile but I had a couple of questions. I started doing more cortisone injections in February, while my hair is growing back I'm 99% sure it has nothing to do with those painful shots! The areas they focus on have had no reaction and I'll probably stop soon. I'm very happy to report that I have an inch missing directly above my left ear and a couple of spots remaining on the bottom right neck area. Thankfully both of those areas are easily covered… Continue

Does massaging the scalp help or is it just in my mind?

Hey all,

So I don't know it it's just my imagination, but I feel like the more I brush/massage the new hairs on my scalp the thicker they become. I used to always hide my regrowth underneath my wig and rarely ever massaged my head unless I was in the shower. I feel like I'm seeing a slight difference...

Has anyone had experience with this? Also, I've heard using some herbs or oils is good, any thoughts?

Thanks for your continued support!

Jen

My experience with regrowth and acceptance

Hey everyone,

My name is Jennifer and I have had Alopecia Areata since age 11 (smack dab in the middle of fifth grade).

I am 23 now and have recently experienced surprising regrowth of 90 percent of my hair. To give you the full history, I had been shaving the fifty percent regrowth I had developed gradually so that I could wear a suctioned wig by "Fuller Hair". To be completely honest, I continued to shave it even as I noticed improvements because I liked feeling in… Continue
