A stranger grabbed both arms

I know I haven't posted anything on here in a while but I just wanted to share this encounter with you all.

This past weekend my boyfriend and I drove to Tampa to go visit my mom. While there we also drove to Venice, FL to go see my boyfriend's grandparents, who he doesn't get to see very often and I had never met. They had taken us out to dinner at this place called The Italian Club. Members of the club prepare dinner every Friday night. While they have a small selection of dishes,… Continue

carrots, eggs, and coffee

You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how

things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it

and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed

as when one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water

and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil.… Continue

I love oblivious people

I was just sitting in class today half paying attention to the professor go on about water pumps or something. I had noticed a hair clip on the ground in my previous that was next to my chair. Out of no where, the guy next to me picks it up and asked me if it was mine. I sat there for a minute trying to figure out who would think that a hair clip of all things would be mine.... Then I realized that he probably just didn't even notice or think about it. I love it when that happens. I don't… Continue

Looking Professional

So, I went to a meeting tonight with a group I am involved in here at my college (Society of Women Engineers). Tonight's meeting was all about how to write resumes and what to expect/be prepared for when having interviews. It was very helpful since about 20 of us are going to the national conference in Baltimore, MD next week. One of the things she mentioned (which was kinda to be expected) was about hair. It was basically the obvious no unnatural colors. It made me start thinking because I… Continue

Doctor

I went to my doctor the other day for just a routine check up. It was my first time seeing her and I mainly went just so I would have a primary doctor if/when I do get sick (I don't trust the doctors at my university). Anyways, I don't wear a wig so she obviously knew I didn't have hair. She is familiar with alopecia so wasn't surprised when I said I had it. I told her it fell out about 5 years ago and within about 3 weeks. She kept asking me if I was happy living with no hair. I said yes,… Continue

Thyroid Problems

I know having alopecia makes it more likely that you will have other auto-immune diseases, thyroid problems being one of them. I was diagnosed with hashimoto's at the same time as alopecia 5 years ago. My TSH levels have always been fine and besides getting tire a lot faster than I should, I have had no problems with it until now. For the last weekish I've just felt like my thyroid is enlarged. It kinda feels like someone is constantly pushing on it or just pressure in my throat. Sometimes it… Continue

Question about working with kids

As I said in my previous blog, I am teaching gymnastics to kids this summer. It is kind of like a camp and there are mixture of different kids every week, some come back for more than one week. The kids are mostly between the ages of 7 and 10. I've gotten some questions about my hair, if I'm really bald, or if it will come back. I have no problem answering the kids questions when they ask. I tell them basically what alopecia is and that there is no certainty that I'll every have hair again.… Continue

first day of work

So today was my first official day at work. I had been in a few times just to see how things work around there and what not. I am teaching a gymnastics "summer camp." Most of the kids are between 7 and 10 years old. A few of them remembered me from when I was in before. I had a feeling that there would be someone who would ask where my hair was and I was right. I couldn't have been there for more than 5 minuets before I got the "what happened to your hair?" The first thing I could think to say… Continue

just a few thoughts on my mind

So, I’ve been thinking for some time. I’ve had AU for just about 5 years now and I’m a sophomore in college. For now, I wear a bandana practically everywhere I go. When I’m at home or in my apartment (at school), I will go around bald because it is more comfortable and I know my family/roommates don’t mind. For a while, when people would come over, the first thing I would think would be to cover up. I’ve slowly come out of that, and will let them see me without anything covering my head. (But… Continue

Jealous of being bald??

Well, I haven't posted a blog yet, so I thought I'd share a story. I went to a tattoo parlor with my roommate today to get a piercing. I had been there once before (about a year ago) and the guy recognized me, but then again, how hard is it to not remember a bald girl? Anyways, being curious, he said "So, you don't have any body hair?" I was like, "no," and then preceded to tell him about alopecia and what it was. Needless to say, he had never heard of it (not many have), but was definitely… Continue
