Finally met my Mr. Right!

You know all of my posts and questions about the dating world and what to do with my wig and how do I tell him and how getting rejected really hurts....well, all of the time that I waited to find the right man has paid off.

I met Tom online and on my dating profile I listed about my alopecia because I wasn't going to hide anything. Right off the bat he was very accepting and supportive. He has been so wonderful! We have been dating just over a month and he has seen me with my wig and…

Skin Cancer Free!

Well, I went on Friday for my surgery to have the skin cancer removed from my scalp. Everything went well, it only took one layer to be cut away and I have no stitches. Much better than the alternative!

So now, I am just going to have to be very careful in the sun, not that my scalp is going to be exposed because it will be covered by a hat, bandana or wig. But just have to be careful in general.

So remember to always use your sunscreen, cover up in the sun and take care… Continue

Not only alopecia, but now skin cancer to boot!

So I went to the dermatologist for a skin check, by the way she didn't even mention anything about my alopecia to me probably because I told her that I stopped treatment but she didn't even seem interested in anything about it. I have had a little bubble type thing on the top of my head for probably about 6 months now, maybe a little longer. It has popped and come back a few times. I thought it was just maybe a wart or something..well it isn't. It is FRIGGIN skin cancer!!

So not only… Continue

Goin Pink for a Cause next week!

So I am very much involved in the Susan G. Komen 3Day for a Cure(Breast Cancer Foundation). I am a crew captain this year, which the crew are the people who work the event and keep it going for the 3 days. I am in charge of 24 people.

I had a get together this past weekend at my house and "came out" to everyone as they were seeing me in a wig that day, but during the event I will be in a hat or bandana so I don't die in the heat. I wanted to make sure to tell them ahead of time, 1)… Continue

Well the inevitable is happening...and dealing with dating

I knew that when I stopped all my medications(which weren't really working in the first place) that I would just continue to lose hair. I just wouldn't think that it would be happening so quickly. I have noticed that my hair is thinning out even more on top and now more on the sides too. Not that it really bothers me now because I knew it was going to happen and I was preparing for it.

But it does go to show that I made my big step of buzzing my hair and getting my wig at just the… Continue

Sweating issue

So this weekend I was at a patio reception for my friends wedding. There was a tent which helped with the sun, but there was no breeze in the tent and it was HOT. I was so embarrassed because I just had sweat running down my face. I knew that it would be different with wearing a wig and that my head would get hot, but it really sucked having the sweat running down my face. Plus the adhesive that I use doesn't last when you sweat..darn it! I had to actually go sit in my car with the a/c on to… Continue

My new favorite wig! And my new nephew!

Me%20Cam%20and%20Zach.JPG

Well I went and picked up my new wigs a week ago and I love my longer one!! I have attached a picture of me in my new look holding my new nephew Zachary(he was born on 4/20) and my niece with us. She is 3 years old.

I love my new wig, I love how it fits my head so much better and just seems like much better quality and much more realistic… Continue

New wig purchases! LOVE THEM!

So when I went back in February and got my first wig, I went to the salon recommended by my aunt who wears a topper. I liked the hairstylist and she made me feel very comfortable with taking the step I did. I liked my first wig, but it just wasn't fitting me or my head right.

So I found a few wig shops that were down the street from that salon which is about a half hour away from me that my mom and I were going to check out today. I had heard that there was a wig shop close to me, but I… Continue

Androgenic Alopecia group - Come join me

I have started a group for those of us with androgenic alopecia. I hadn't seen one specific to our type of alopecia, so I figured I would start up a group. Come join me if you are one of my friends, or soon to be friends, with AA(androgenic alopecia)!

Allergic to the wig shampoo?

Has anyone else had any issues with wig shampoo/conditioner? I have had my wig since mid February but just in the past week I have had dermatitis on my ears and now it is on my cheeks. I don't know if it is possibly my wig shampoo that I am using.

I am using the products that I got at the salon, but I also bought some online so I am going to try washing it with that shampoo tonight. Just curious if anyone else has that issue.

My scalp is a little itchy too, so that is why… Continue

How do you control shifting/moving? Make the wig more secure?

I got my first wig in February and I am still getting used to it in some ways, but have a question. Throughout the day my wig shifts back and I find myself pulling it down in front. I bought a gel headband, but that doesn't seem to stay in place(I think that is more for when I don't have any hair on my head). I don't know if it just means that I need to trim my hair more, or what I should do.

Anyone have any pointers on what I can do? Anything to make it stay in place better? I can't… Continue

A stranger looking back at me in the mirror

So it has been about a month since I got my wig(my first one). I feel much more confident, but at times it feels like there is a stranger looking back at me in the mirror or in pictures. I used to take pictures of myself in the morning (every morning) and send it to my bestie, but I just don't like the pictures cuz it doesn't really look like me.

I am not questioning my decision at all, but just wondering if anyone else had this feeling in the beginning?

I know it has to… Continue

Getting more comfortable

Well my friend Liselle called me out about not bein on AW lately, so I decided to post a blog. Thanks Liselle for reminding me to blog!

I am getting more and more comfortable with my wig, I am actually getting more comfortable with my buzzed hair too. I actually have showed it to my bestie's kids and husband in KY. I skype with her since we are 6 hours away. They all said that I look good, but of course they aren't seeing the top of my head, but atleast they make me feel comfortable… Continue

First wig week down...many to go

Well, I have made it thru my work week with my first wig. It is better today than it has been the past couple days. It was more itchy for a little while there, but today has started off good. I have gotten alot of compliments this week, alot of surprise reactions when I tell them I have a wig, and alot of looks like they want to ask or they are trying to figure it out.

If someone asks me about it, then I am telling them. If it is someone that I am friends with, I tell them. Other… Continue

Buzzing my hair and my first work day as the new me!

Well, I buzzed my hair to about 1/2 inch this weekend. My mom did it for me and we had tears of course, but it was very releasing for me. It was my way of saying goodbye to alopecia, goodbye to the depression and the sadness. I felt vulnerable for a minute then looked at myself in the mirror and said "damn I look hot" LOL! I showed my dad my buzzed do and he gave me a big hug and said there is nothing wrong with me. I am so glad that my parents were so supportive. And then I put my wig on(and… Continue

Today is my freedom day!

So today I am getting my freedom back from this ugly thing called androgenic alopecia.

Step 1: Yesterday I got my first wig and I love the way it looks!

Step 2: Buzzing my hair(not completely shaving but buzzing it very short)

Step 3: MOVING ON!

This last week before I got my wig, I was so down on myself. Of course getting on the scale I saw the "winter weight" which I hate..so I gotta work on that one. But I was just nauseous with the hair that I was losing every day… Continue

Wig consult #2 is today...wish me luck

Well today is my second consult for a wig, hopefully she has more styles/colors that fit me and that I like. I am hoping to walk out today with my new do but will be ok if I have to wait(but only a little longer). I also found a wig shop that is down the street from the salon that I am going to that carries the brand of wigs that I like from the styles I see online, Rene of Paris. So if I don't find anything at the salon, I might swing by the wig store and see if I can find anything… Continue

Thinning out a wig, lessening the shine and what type of mesh is best

I went to my first wig consultation last weekend and have a few follow up questions I need some advice on:

1) they seemed to be sooooo much hair, I guess because I am just not used to having so much hair on my head. Can a synthetic wig be thinned out so that it looks a little more natural?

2) I noticed that some of the wigs I tried on were a little too shiny. I saw on a website that you can either use baby shower or wash it in fabric softener and water to get rid of some of the… Continue

Wig consultation #1...check!

Well I went today for my first consultation and it went better than I thought. The stylist showed me a couple different options before she got to the wigs(what I am going to be doing). Since my hair is continuing to thin and the lower half of my hair isn't really enough to wear with a topper, I have to go with a full wig which was what I was planning anyways.

I got to be a blond with a bob cut, a long haired blond, a long haired brunette and cousin it! LOL! I even looked like Shrek's wife… Continue
