Your Guide to Microblading, Eyelash Extensions, and More

"Hair loss due to alopecia can be discouraging. It impacts not only your outward appearance, but often your self-esteem as well. While many people who have alopecia feel confident in the visible display of their condition, others may be interested in camouflaging or disguising hair loss."

Hair Donation

Hello all,

My friend is wanting to donate her hair to an organization that makes wigs for individuals who have alopecia. However, her hair has been dyed. Does anyone know of a reliable organization that will accept her hair? I appreciate any help and responses.

Sincerely,

Lauren

I Am My Hair.

Imagine this: Years of dedication and hard work towards my first masters degree. With the finish line in sight, my heart filled with nothing but excitement and bliss for what my future holds, only to wake up to spots of bare skin where my hair would usually be. I had interviews and meetings that I was prepared for. I had no doubt in my mind these meetings would open doors to the future I had dreamt about for the past 8 years. Now I felt nothing but self consciousness and anxiety. How…

Still do not have the courage to accept my baldness and just uncover and let go.

When my oldest son asked me to let him see.  I hesitated but I pulled off my wig and I looked at him, he just stared as if he did not believe what he was seeing but he was very supportive with me and he said well one day when I get a lot of money I am going to send you to Bosley I promise you momma. How sweet of him. I know that day is far away. I just need to find something that will give me confidence like a wig where I can feel like my own hair, can…

With or without

As a kid whenever I saw a fountain or a wishing spiral, I always asked my mom for a penny or a dime to toss in. When she gave one to me I would hold the coin, close my eyes and wish as hard as I could that I would grow hair. Every single birthday wish, fountain wish and falling star wish, was the same wish since I could remember. I didn’t wish for toys or candy or anything a normal kid would want. I think back to that little girl and I find my self smiling at how silly I was to want…

I'm NOT having chemotherapy!

So I just started a new job about 6 months ago at a popular chain book store and in the first few months of working there I just went as what I think of as "myself" just a shaved head. (androgenous alopecia) In those few months I got numerous women coming up to me and asking if I was going through chemotherapy.  Some simply just smiled sympathetically at me and said they would pray for me.

One woman who happens to be a regular customer automatically thought I had cancer and skipped…

I am newly diagnosed with AA; this is what I have started trying

Hello,   I am newly diagnosed with AA, it all started in Jan. 2014, I too have had long very thick and fast growing hair my whole life.  But in Jan. it started to fall out, I was not concerned because secretly I have had lots of challenges with the thick hair.  Feb., it still kept falling out, no bald patches just continuously falling out, lots and lots of hair in bathtub, on floor when styling. By March it was getting thin all over, hair changed its normal thick, somewhat coarse texture to…

Does anyone know of any good salons in Vancouver, BC doing hair extensions?

I have been battling with Alopecia for 2 years now. My hair has become so thin that at times you can see the scalp through my hair when I wear it down OR up. I am considering getting hair extension to create more fullness. I have never had them before, so I am a little lost as to which ones are the best, affordable ones in the Vancouver (or lower mainland) area.

Can anyone help me with this? Your comments are highly appreciated! Thank you!!

Am I strong?

For that matter, am I brave?

People seem to think I am. But in all honesty I don't know that I'm any different from the next person who just doesn't let things stop them. Especially the things that may seem impossible from the onset.

Maybe it's Faith - Faith in the knowledge that things just have a way of working out in the end.

But, for all my seeming to be strong and comfortable in my skin, I do have a few concerns. One in particular is me trying to wrap my head around…

I have no hair! Now what?

“It’s a wig!” I’m all too happy to tell you this upon our first meeting. I really don’t mind informing you of that whatsoever. I’ve always felt a bit like I’m a made-up, false Hollywood façade. You know the kind of fake building facades that you might find on a Hollywood Studio backlot? Wearing a wig and being complimented on my hair makes me feel like this.

But I’ve jumped way ahead. So, let me back up a bit…

To begin, I was diagnosed with Androgenetic Alopecia nearly 13 years…

Finding courage & adventure: Dear TSA, Please don't require me to remove my wig 0.o

I have always been a traveler. I love everything about new places, from finding a random movie theater in Wisconsin to eating at a great restaurant in Puerto Rico. I love just people watching. I would pack my bag, throw on my wig, and jump in my car/get on a plane. I'm that free-spirited, get up and go with just a small bag type.

Well, one of the things I started to notice was that as our country cracks down on national security, TSA/Airport personnel were starting to check for…

Alone in Alopecia World

I've never "blogged" before so be patient as I must learn as I go.

I feel like I'm an outsider in Alopecia World, which saddens me because I thought here was a place where I'd find people who would be more accepting and understanding than anywhere else. Please don't misunderstand; I'm not making accusations, nor am I criticising anyone in here. I am "different" from most people with or without alopecia. I've always marched to the beat of another drum, not concerned with what others…

It is okay to replace what's missing

When we can't see: glasses or contacts.

When we need a lift: bra.

When our teeth break or get strange: braces, caps, whitening, bridges.

When a heart fails: stent.

When arches drop: shoe inserts.

To cover nakedness: clothing.

To not be animals: toilets, deodorant, condoms, houses, sweet scents.

To improve color: make-up.

So...why stress over wearing anything new on a head? Seriously! You've already agreed to the inventions of humans, so why not one…

Why so much emphasis on hair and not other style changes?

Every winter I change my hair extensions out and wear a wig. With my puny hair, I feel it is best to give it a rest from extensions, and also at the ranch my own hair with extensions does not hold well in the wind and rain.

I love my wigs, but every year it is the same process of getting used to the comments others make about my new hair. Some people are very kind, others not so much. I have learned from past experience that this goes with the territory.

I can't help but wonder why…

Tape extensions

This is kinda crazy but I am so against wearing a wig. However I was wondering if I could use the seamless hair extensions all over my head to make it more realistic and would stay on for a month or so? Has anyone heard of it or tried it? Its just an idea but if I could do it I would. My mom is a hairdresser so i think she could get them for dirt cheap if not free.

Second post

Hello everyone. First off, thanks to you all who commented on my first post. I went away on vacation and saw a bunch of family, including many young nieces and nephews. While it was fun, I kept thinking over and over how this will be the last time anyone on my husband's side of the family will see me with my natural hair. The little girls loved playing with my hair and I was just so nervous about them making a comment about my growing bald spots. Thankfully they did not. But ack.. why do I…

New member saying hello to you all

Hello everyone. I just found and joined this site last night. First, I wanted to say that I am grateful this site exists. I stumbled upon it when I was looking for information on how to exercise in a wig. It looks like an amazing community and I look forward to getting to know everyone.

Second, a little about me. I am in my mid-30s and was diagnosed last year with scarring alopecia. When that diagnosis came in April, it was like my whole life felt shattered. I had been worried about…
