Guest "listener" at NAAF NYC-chapter monthly meeting

I had a wonderful evening at last Monday night's NAAF meeting here in NYC. Rather than give the usual "these are our wigs" routine, I asked for feedback from the other guests regarding their wig-buying experiences - good, bad or other. Almost everyone stressed a need for patience as the wig buying experience is a "journey". Other points included not being too technical, especially with people buying their first wig.

All-in-all, it was a very special evening and I'd like to thanks to… Continue

Went to the doctor yesterday afternoon......And I have realized more and more that all we can do is take it day by day and live life to the fullest!!!!

So yesterday I had one of those days were I felt sad about the unknown in regards to my daughter and how much my life and mentality have change and will continue to change in a positive way. While I was at worked I started to think about a million things and of course I felt a little down.... I was a little stressed and basically mad at the world..lol. I know we all go through these days. Its just that some people don't want to admit it. Well anyways when I got home to my children my day got a… Continue

Wigs in the sun!

Hey guys,

It's been a while since I've been on here but I have a few questions and was hoping to get some advice.

I am currently wearing monofilament wigs and am going to Seville in Spain for 4 weeks with work and it is due to be very hot. I was wondering if anyone has been to a hot climate and found wearing their wig to be uncomfortable? I have been wearing wigs since January this year and have experienced no discomfort so far and hoping things will stay like… Continue

Time to go!

Washing what I have left of my natural hair I noticed a toony size bald spot right by my temple area.I stared at it for a few seconds, then continued styling what I had over it and noticed I wasn't covering it well, took yet another look, stared at it, and said out loud," that's it, its time to go". These patches keep apearing and i'm getting sick of trying to hide it. SHAVE SHAVE SHAVE here I come!! I feel good at the moment that its all coming off tonight but i'm not sure how I will feel once… Continue

I thought my nightmare was over

It has been about 9 months since I found my first spot.

It took about a month for my hair to stop falling out and since that time those areas are growing back. :)

I was lucky because the spots my hair fell out were all on the back of my head, underneath the rest of my thick hair. No one could see but me, my hair. I Love God! I have trusted that he would heal me and that this was over, and as far as I could tell it was!

until...

Yesterday I find another spot, about the size… Continue

Do not get down. Instead, try to be someone's hero everyday continued

This is a continuation from my previous blog Sorry had to go to my daughters baseball game but here it goes. I then enrolled in a all male High School this way I did not have to confront the opposite sex. It was very difficult in some regards but it helped mold me to become strong after the usual rounds of jabs about my condition I settled in nicely and developed some friends and many values. The school motto held true for me “You come to Carmel as a boy. If you care to struggle and work at it,… Continue

Wish things would turn around

I guess I am not the most patient person in the world, I feel like I do whatever it takes to better myself and always seem to be dissappointed. I recently interviewed for a position and of course I was excited and told a few people at work. Well one lady at work with a good career decided to apply for it as well. She drilled me about the job and would not have any idea if I didn't tell her since the posting was not in her area. So now I am bummed about this because is had a potential career… Continue

Do not get down. Instead, try to be someone's hero everyday

Well here is my story I hope it helps someone realize that Alopecia should not become a crutch or a burden. We all should also realize it affects the ones we love or love us much more than it does us.

I began to lose my hair at the age of 2 at that time I was growing up in Mexico and my mother just emigrated to the USA. I lived with my grandparents who really were supportive and loved me very much. At the age of 6 my mother sent for me and I had a rough time dealing with the move. I… Continue

My Weekend

I told my mom I wanted to shave my hair off. I thought she was going to have a heart attack. Nobody else at the table expressed their opinion so I took it as a 'NO'. I then called my older sister, also my beautician to tell her about my decision. She said it was up to me but because my hair wasn't falling out and I still have a good amount of hair left, about 3/4 of my head. It would be better if she could braid my hair because of maintaince purposes. I agreed with her because she is the one… Continue

What is "beautiful?"

Alopecia may be the most visible thing about your body that differs from others from the neck up, but if that VISION is what bothers you, you can change the vision to something you will accept for yourself, even if it is not "original" or "perfect."

Instead of concentrating on only ONE aspect, however (sight), you can assess your other senses as well (sound, smell, taste, touch), plus aspects of heart, mind, humor, empathy, creativity, musical or artistic talent, movement, verbal… Continue

Dotty's Inspirational/Motivational Reflection

Some sound advice!!!!

ONE. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

TWO. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.

THREE. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

FOUR. When you say, 'I love you,' mean it.

FIVE. When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the… Continue

Progress

I thought I was moving ahead by wearing the scaves the past couple of weeks, but then when I went out today I felt totally different. I went to brunch with my husband today and realized I was the only woman in the restaurant without hair. I felt so cheated and unhappy. This is a set back and I don't know how to get past it. I want to cry but I know that's not going to help. Why did this thing happen to us?

Alopecia and Anxiety

I am 22 years old. I found out I had alopecia areata when I was 20. I had long hair, and when it started getting really bad I chopped my hair off, and just waited for it to get better and grow back. Shortly after my 21st birthday the alopecia seemed to stop acting up, and all the spots started to grow, and fill in. I am 22 now, and my hair is past my shoulders again, but in the last couple of months I started seeing new spots. It is frustrating, but I know the only thing I can do about it is… Continue

Change Your World

By Brian Tracy

You cannot change the world, but you can present the world with one improved person, yourself.

You can go to work on yourself to make yourself into the kind of person you admire and respect.

You can become a role model and set a standard for others.

You can control and discipline yourself to resist acting or speaking in a negative way toward anyone for any reason.

You can insist upon always doing…

Hair came out again:(

Well, Chandler's hair grew in for about 1/2 a year and then it all came out, now the eyebrows and eyelashes came out with it! Chandler has accepted it and does not want to try any more creams, lotions, pills, etc. She says she is used to being bald and can't remember even having her long hair! She has a great wig and no one has seemed to notice that it is a wig or if they do they have not said anything. One thing that is noticeable is her missing eyelashes and eyebrows. Kids notice that right… Continue

Annoyed

I've been trying to decide whether or not I should shave my head before getting a wig to put on it. My family is against the whole 'shaving my head completely' idea. I feel like my hair really has no value. I can only put it up in a ponytail so that the bald spot will not show. I can at least braid it before I put the wig on, but I feel like it makes no sense to keep the hair on my head that I cannot style. It's ridiculous and frustrating. lol. I can't believe I feel like I may have a panic… Continue

Grateful for the things I have, not what I want!

iT'S been quite a rough past week, probably worst week i've had in a while, and its all over my damn hair! (pardon my french :)

I found myself awaken around 3 a.m everyday for the past week, only to think about my hair, will it ever grow back?, what did I do to deserve it?,how much worst is it gonna get?, all this over tears, well at least no one seen me .

I woke up this morning did my normal things around the house and decided to enjoy the fresh air out in my yard.

"Accepting the things that I cannot change"

When I first saw the first quarter size spot on my daughers head I went histerical. I did some research online and took her to the doctor. He told me not to worry about it and that he would do some tests to make sure it wasn't ring worm or some other type of bacteria. Well they told me that the lab test were negative for any virus or bacteria. The doctor then told me that she was healthy and that I did not need to worry about it. I had a breakdown just thinking how hard the situation would be… Continue
