About Me:
I'm a 47 year old divorced father of 2. I've had alopecia in some form or another since I was 15. It started with areata - a small spot on the back of my head. Then another spot and another. I went to the doctor to find out what I had. I already suspected what it was because my mom has alopecia too. I tried several treatments, including a battery of 120 cortizone shots in my scalp...OUCH! It continued to get worse. I wore a cap through 10th and 11th grade. Got a hairpiece in 12th grade,at the behest of my grandparents. My hair grew back underneath and I had most of my hair back by graduation. I ditched the rug that summer, but my hair fell out worse than before. This time I had to get a full wig. I wore that for a couple years while my hair grew back underneath. Finally I had enough of my own hair to ditch the wig. But within a year I had more bald spots. This time I decided to just shave my head - camoflage for the bald spots. It's grown back twice since then, but each time it began to fall out it was worse than before. It eventually became totalis, and now it's full on universalis. Not a hair on my body. Any single women out there with a fettish for hairless men?

Does anyone have any funny stories?

Posted on March 27, 2011 at 1:56am 11 Comments

I just recently discovered AW and have been reading a lot of your stories. Understandably, many of us get bummed out about our condition; particularly the people who are new to it. But in reading many of the posts I've also been reminded of some of the funny things that have happened to me in the 32 years I've been dealing with alopecia. These stories took place during the 3 1/2 years I tried to hide my AA with a wig, when I was 18 - 21 years old.

Back in my late teens and early twenties… Continue

Wow- sorry you mom has this too! I imagine however that not much has changed from when she was first diagnosed til now! frustrating! No one in my family has it!

Just read you blog above!! funny stories! Whenever I get a bald spot on the top of my head... as the re-growth starts it always grows straight up! Like a little spout on top of my head - once there is a little length to it- it falls over. Anyway - my sister will pull hair the like a pull string ( like on the top of a kids toy) and I do a little dance for her. IT was cute a first... BUT man does that get old! quick! I recently blamed a spot (that a stranger was kind enough to point out to me !) on my 4 year nephew... gum in the hair story seemed much easier than explaining alopecia to a stranger. :)

Ken,

I know! It it both comforting and just a little sad too that so many have alopecia. I've had AA for just over 20 years.... and do feel lucky that so far it's just been spots. Fingers stay crossed on that one! See you've done the steroid shots.. too! fun! I still use a steroid topical. Are you currently trying any type of treatment or holistic approach?

Hi Ken,
I hope you enjoy the site. I know I have been and continue to do so.
I've only had alopecia going on 4 years now and this site has helped me tremendously.
Hope all is good with you.
