About Me:
When I was 9, I lost about 85% of my hair to Alopecia. Luckily, after the purchase of a wig, it started growing back. I had spots regularly, but nothing that I couldn't hide with some styling. Now here I am at 24 and things are getting worse. My eyebrows started going a about 3 years ago and my eyelashes a year ago. I'd say that 75% of my head's hair is gone but it's still at the point that I can hide it. Well, given the absence of any wind. But it's getting worse slowly but surely.

So for the first time in my adult(and single) life, I'm getting to the point where I have to actually consider what living with alopecia will really be like.

Now then, a quick rundown on the non-alopecia information:

I graduated with a bachelors in English in May 2008. I love horrible pop culture ("Snakes on a Plane" was by far the best movie going experience I've had). Two of my favorite bands are Magnolia Electric Co. and The Kinks. I work at Half Price Books(amazing store) and a coffee shop. I just got internet at my apartment so I look forward to blaming Hulu for my total drop in productivity. The first thing I do in the morning is turn on NPR. I tend to spend a lot of my free time reading or talking at coffee shops. I once opened a game of scrabble with 87 points ("stymied" on a double word score with a double on the y and 50 bonus for the use of 7 letters).

Have You Seen This Wig!?!?!

Getting ready for the big shave and trying to find a good wig.

I love Ginnifer Goodwin's hair...honestly, it's kind of like my pre-Alopecia hair but with better volume:…

Hi Kara,

Don't let this thing called alopecia get to you too much. I know it's hard to deal with and hopefully with time accept.
I know you can do it with friends from here.
I know Alopecia World helped me so so much. Plus my 3 NAAF Conferences with my 3 years of my alopecia journey.

Hugz,
Jeffrey

Kara! Thanks for the kind comments on my wig :) It is a Freedom wig, and I LoOOOove it! I got it from Karen Peterik; she is the Freedom wig representative in the Midwest (she is located in Chicago). She is fantastic and played a huge role in helping me accept my alopecia and move forward. Her website is: www.newlifehair.com

It is definitely really hard to make that final step towards the "Big Shave," but I feel like I am finally LIVING my life! The biggest realization of that was when I was in NYC on the Staten Island Ferry; it was super windy on the deck, and in the past I would have been terrified of standing out there because my bald spots would have shown. And with my old lace wig, I would have been afraid that it would have flown off. But with my Freedom wig on, I didn't have to worry about any of that. It was such a feeling of relief. Please feel free to ask me any other questions about it. Purchasing a Freedom wig is a big decision, and I definitely asked a ton of questions before I finally got one.

Take care,
Natalie

HI Kara, I love your "about me" section. First, I wanted to say that rj love Half books too. He is a huge book fan. He also loves scavaging through 2nd hand stores for book gems.

The other thing I wanted to mention is a interesting comment you made, that made me think. "So for the first time in my adult(and single) life, I'm getting to the point where I have to actually consider what living with alopecia will really be like.".

You are so right, it is really easy for us to cover up and go into denial until in some cases we are forced out of our comfort zone and to deal with the situations in front of us. Very well said. Welcome back to Alopecia World and I look forward to getting to know you.

Hi
Nice work with joining up to something when you feel a little sick inside. I love that you're an English major. Oh to spend two minutes reading something other than textbooks would be my idea of bliss. Hope you are having a lovely Monday x

Hi, Kara, thanks for the friend request & welcome to AW. You are so cute; you have such a pretty smile. I know how hard alopecia can be, I've grown up like this, but I promise it does/will get better. It's a process that's unique to every one. But you will find so much support here. Stay strong :)
