About Me:
I started losing my hair when I was around 30 or so, and its slowly gotten worse. I thought it was from medications I am on, but a dermatologist I went to said it was alopecia areata. I am struggling with self-esteem issues, but my emotions get the best of me sometimes (those shampoo commercials make me cry and get angry at the same time!) I'm only human, and I'm trying the best I can. I am glad to have found this website and I look forward to communicating and learning more.
Do you have alopecia?
Female pattern baldness
Are you age 18 or older?
Yes - I am 18 or older

Getting used to things....

Posted on August 1, 2009 at 5:56pm 11 Comments

Well, so in the past 3 months, I've discovered that wearing a wig is not too traumatic an experience. I screwed up the courage to start wearing the first one I've bought (the bob cut one) to work at the end of April, and I was just absolutely bowled over by all the compliments and comments everyone had! I think I had the biggest ego of my life that day! (Which honestly, I very much enjoyed as I have not had an overabundance of self-esteem in the last many years).

However, I had a… Continue

My story and my current dilemma

Well, I am not sure what it is I have. From the pictures I've seen, its not alopecia areata - that seems more like quarter size circles, or areas, where the hair falls out completely. My hair looks more like female pattern baldness. I've lost the hair gradually over the last 6 or so years, mostly on the top and crown and now on the right side too. Fron the side, you can pretty much see the outline of my scalp, and I'm doing the comb-over thing from the left side over the top of my head, which I… Continue

Hi Jenn! So I just got back from my vacation in Florida, and it was a lot of fun to see my boyfriend and friend, but unfortunately it was raining the whole time we were there :( One of the nights my friend took us to a winery in Plant City that makes their own wine and it was delicious! Then we went out for sushi in Ybor and walked around there for awhile- it had a really cool atmosphere- very nice. I couldn't believe how hot it was though, and my friend who lives there started laughing and said "This is nothing. Wait until summer, then it's really hot." Me, being from cold Wisconsin, is certainly not used to that heat hahaha- but it was nice to take a vacation. Very impressive city!

I FINALLY found a job in Washington, DC, so I will be moving out there next week- I am soooo excited! I have been job searching for months, and now that I am finally graduated, the pressure was really on to find one. I was starting to worry, but now I feel much better- *whew!* How are things in Florida for you? How is your wig going? I am getting my vacuum wig in a few weeks yippee! Hope that all is well :) Talk to you soon.

Hello and welcome, Jenn!
I know how hard hair loss can be; I have had it for about 30 years. After I became the spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, a lot of women were needing my help and support, so I wrote a book called, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" You can find out more on my page -- and it's available on this site under "Bookshelf." Let me know if there's anything else I can do!

Yaaaah I am so excited to come to sunny Florida! Thanks so much for all of the recommendations- I am going to be sure to look into those asap. I agree that is so nice to have a place like this where everyone understands and you can just be yourself and talk about your emotions with this whole hairloss process. I wore my wig out last night at the Britney Spears concert in Chicago (I love her! hehe) and it felt sooooo good to not have to worry about my hair and my spots showing. It is such a weight off of my shoulders to have this wig and finally feel comfortable in public again.

Let me know how your haircut goes- I am actually going to get my head buzzed again today because the spots that I still have left are growing like weeds and when I tape my wig down the tape gets stuck in my hair and it hurts soo much when I take it off! (Like ripping a band-aid off, but worse.) I wish it would just make up its mind and either all fall out or all grow in. My scalp looks like a globe haha.

Keep smiling Jenn :) Talk to you soon.

Hi Jenn! Thanks for your kind comments :) I read your blog and know just how you feel when it comes to not being able to go swimming or getting your hair wet because then your bald spots show....it's definitely a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

That is really awesome that you have such supportive co-workers. People like that in life make more of a difference than they will ever know. Good luck wearing your wig to work! You will look fabulous! I am also going through a similar thing with my wig: I have been going to classes for the past few months with a hat or a scarf or with my barely-there-hair pinned in all sorts of goofy ways to hide my spots. But now that I have my wig (which I love!) I feel like it is so obvious to those people in my classes that it isn't really my own hair. I'd like to say that I completely don't care, but there's always a tiny part that does. I just try to make sure I am confident every day, and hopefully others will see our strength.

Guess what? My boyfriend and I are taking a vacation in St. Petersburg from May 20-24!!! One of my oldest and best childhood friends lives in Tampa and works at Raymond James, so we are flying down there to visit her! How is the weather? Hot, I bet. Yippeee! It is still pretty chilly here in Wisconsin, I can't wait to soak up some sun on the beach! Do you recommend any good restaurants/bars/events/shopping in the area? I'm very excited! I hope that everything goes well with your first wig appearance at work, and I'm sure you will look beautiful. Take care and talk to you soon.
Cheers,
Natalie
