The Wig...

When my family and I had accepted the fact that I would have to wear a wig to hide my growing hair loss, I was the tender age of nine. This was the mid Sixties and long straight hair was just becoming all the rage. I pictured picking out a long, flowing wig that would be the envy of all the other fifth graders in my class. Have you ever lived with a secret? Have you ever lived a lie? I never really thought about it much until I caught the tail end of Oprah. She was talking to people who were living a lie. Some of these people were regular people during the day and strippers or prostitutes at night. Another was living a rich and famous life but had been dirt poor as a child though no one knew. Oh, the humility of it all!

My hair kept coming out and, as prescribed by our family doctor, my mom began applying cortisone cream, wrapping my head in Saran Wrap, and topping it off with a shower cap. (The idea was to get the head to sweat which would cause the blood to rush to the surface of my scalp and help stimulate the skin and allow the cortisone to do its work.)
