I know there has been a lot of discussion about this topic, however not recently. Since studies prove that this is probably the most effective treatment, I have started this some weeks ago and hope…Continue

Do you have alopecia?
Alopecia areata
Are you age 18 or older?
Yes - I am 18 or older

As a six year old, I had one spot, which grew back quickly. In my twenties, an area at the nape of my neck fell out, but also grew back by its own within a couple of months (3 or so). Now at 38, I suffer from severe ophiasis. It started two years ago after my firstborn, with one spot above the ear, then turned to fullblown ophiais after my second daughter was born. September 2014 was devastating. I lost the right-side and nape area within two weeks. I have been trying steroid shots; hair grows, but falls out again. I tried everything: the diet, yoga, reduce stress, etc. Nothing worked. I've done a total internal check up - nothing.

I am with my 3rd derm, who is understanding. Just a month ago, he put me on antibiotics for a root canal treatment done in janauary (I had an infection I wasn;t aware of for 2 years). According to the derm, the infection may have been the trigger. Unfortunately, I don't see any change and I keep shedding (one day worse than the other). I am still hoping for a miracle, but don't find any positive stories on ophiasis...

Hi Dolly, I'm sorry, I haven't been on this website a lot in the past year and just saw your message.  I was only on the mtx and steroid for a short period because as soon as it worked, I stopped everything to get pregnant. The doctor's planned to was ween me off the steroids after a year if I got growth back.  Everything was on hold for 3 yrs.  Now he doesn't want to have me go back to mtx and wants to wait for a topical biologic.  I'm also a good candidate for clinical trials, but you can't do those if you have been doing other treatments. After 4 yrs, I'm used to wigs and am not so desperate. I did get impatient in May and started using Hair Up.  You have to have some hair -- which I got back with Vit D 10K doses -- for that to work.  I had fuzz for over a year with no progression.  This seems to be working.  It's spotty and not sure I'll ever be able to forgo wigs, but nice to have some coverage.  I got to the screening stage of a trial and reading the side effects had me really scared so I think going with topical solutions are the way to go.

No, from California, USA. I have a distant cousin, our great grandmothers were sisters that had AA and her hair grew back for awhile and now she has AU. Dr.'s say this is too distant of a relationship to be considered genetic. From what I have read there is usually someone in your family that had Alopecia. I am educating people along the way as to the difference between women at my work with female pattern baldness and Alopecia. I let everyone know about my condition in case at some point the loss accelerates.
