Out of the mouths of babes- conversations with kids about alopecia :-)

Posted on April 15, 2012 at 2:01pm 2 Comments

I have had some great conversations with kids in the past 24 hours about my alopecia and wanted to share.

Last night I met 3 adorable kids, and this was my conversation with them:

Adorable little boy#1:" I thought youd have long hair" (he had been told about me and that I was going to babysit him and his siblings during a kirtan)

Me: "Nope, I dont have any hair"

ALB#1: "You have some."

Me: "Yes, I do"

ALB#1: "Why dont you have any hair?"

Me: "…

Well...it has been quite awhile since Ive written on here. Lots of growth, and lots of self love since.

Last July 2nd, while in the midst of a week of overnight pet sitting gigs, being very sleep deprived, I went outside with nothing on my head. I usually wore a wig or a bandana or something. Very rarely went out with a bare head. As I was walking the dog I was caring for, I was thinking, okay, maybe no one will be out. As soon as I thought that, people started walking by or driving… Continue

I went out last night and had a great time- took myself to a local tea house and did their Friday night tea tasting. I sat at the bar across from a mirror, which at first thought was a bad idea, but I now see it wasnt. I have been becoming increasingly(as if I wasnt enough already!) self conscious about losing my eyebrows, my alopecia has turned from areata to totalis this time, I am losing hair everywhere, not just my head and a few places on my arms and legs.

The loss of my… Continue

Hi there, I am Christine. I have had alopecia since 1998- my hairdresser noticed a small bald patch behind my right ear.In 3 years it progressed to me being fully bald on my head, and a couple small patches on my arms and legs. When I had lost most of my hair, all but a thin patch, my parents decided to buy a wig for me for Christmas that year. It was amazing how much it helped. It wasnt anything fancy, just a $35 wig from a local wig shop run by an Asian lady. She helped us pick it out, said… Continue

Hi Christine. My goodness, if I didn't know better I would of thought I posted this. My same story in a nutshell. You are lucky to have the resources close to you to get a decent wig. I am from Kokomo Indiana and the only thing here is a beauty supply store. I unfortunately will have to make a trip there to see what they have. I used to wear a New Freedom hairpiece and did I love it, YES. But those are way out of my price range and quite hot. I just recently purchased a human hair wig from a company that I will not mention. All I can say is it was over $1000.00 and I am so not happy with it. I feel I would have gotten a better result from a synthetic wig. As I have seen people on here post, I am bald not rich. As far as your eyebrows go, same happening with me, if you check out my profile, Jennifer, posted about a site you can go to for temporary eyebrows but not forever. She talked highly of them. Check out blinkiesonline.com/eyebrows
I check them out and asked her how she chose a color. I am thinking of trying them out, but I have to get the nerve. They are rather inexpensive, but I hate spending money I don't have to be dissappointed by the results.
Good luck, Mary

Hello and welcome, Christine!
I know how hard alopecia can be; I have had it for about 30 years. After I became the spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, a lot of women were needing my help and support, so I wrote a book called, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" You can find out more on my page -- and it's available on this site under "Bookshelf." Let me know if there's anything else I can do!
