telogen effluvium

Information

telogen effluvium

Stress generally causes a type of hair loss referred to as telogen effluvium. Telogen effluvium is the reversible shedding of hair in the resting phase when the body senses, for reasons that are not clear, that it needs to divert its energies.

Yea my eye lashes/brows fall out in a clump if i rub, my mum says I'm pulling them out! which i know i am not doing.

Also my beard is all patchy and have also noticed the areas where it has/is falling that the hair goes frosty and comes out easily if i rub it.

ark at us moaning! lol

Do you find the Rogaine helps Alice? I have never tried it... just really didn't want to go down that road and it's so expensive, I couldn't afford it.

I have the incredibly shiny scalp and extremely greasy/oily hair issue without using it. I always thought the shine and grease was related to my hair loss. I call my head my disco ball - in certain lights it seems worse than others. The grease/oil aspect really bothers me as I have to wash my head/hair every day, which can be a complete pain.

Also was wondering if either of you have any autoimmune problems?

It seems like we are all losing our eyebrows and eyelashes. The weird thing is, I noticed on my right eyebrow I always lose more... like if I just touch it or rub it, about 4 eyelashes will fall out in a clump. I fill my eyebrows in with eyebrow pencil/powder. I find that I get very itchy scalp and eyebrows. I have a real struggle to not scratch. When I first started losing my hair I had dreadful scalp pain as well as the itching, but that is less nowadays.

Tommy

You should see what digusting "hairballs" I have pulled out of the drain LOL! It's so gross. Sometimes when I see how much falls, I am surprised I have any left on my head!

I agree with you about the UK docs. They are not good. Hair loss seems to be seen as more cosmetic than anything. They don't seem to acknowledge the link between hair loss and health problems and then the affect that the hair loss has on our self-esteem, mental and emotional health.

My hair texture seems to have changed over the years.

also my lashes/brows have fell out alot. They used to be really thick but not anymore :( in away i suppose I'm slightly luck that i had thick lashes/brows so they must take longer to look poo.

When yours come out do u get like a itchy feeling or you feel like your eyelashes are sorta in your eye?

Dear Alice

I think it may be more common then we all know! Just goes under the radar abit. Some doctors would just say it was male patten as it can affect that area.

As when I first went to my GP he said it was my psoriasis. The uk is rubbish with hair-loss as none of them have a clue! (mostly)

my hair fell out with in a 2-3 week period which i looked almost bald. I used to massage my hair-loss by the hairs in my bath, i got a round bath which is quite big and it used to cover the bottom of it! Make you think how hair went down the plug hole as well.

It did grow back shitty but carried on 'resetting' at a fast pace and went sort of glassy? does that make sense?

It starge as some of my hair have gone dark again but with some little 'holes' and a couple of bigs one's. but the shininess i hate which is everywhere! I guess that's when the hair has reset so much that it dies.

like me inside :(

Hi Alice

I think I have a mix of CTE and AGA, as I think the TE has sparked off the AGA. Some of my periods of heavy "shedding" have lasted for up to 18 months in one go. I do get regrowth, but it never stays long enough to make a difference. I sometimes think if they can find what is causing the TE, then there is hope of recovery - e.g. people who have thyroid problems that get treated or anaemia. I guess those are the people whose hair grows back.

My MIL (in her 70s) was just diagnosed with this.....it has been very hard for her. She carries a lot of stress....stress that needs to be alleviated. She started losing large amounts of hair in a matter of weeks. Her hair has become very thin now....I haven't shared with her that I have been living with AA for 4 years because it would be even more stress for her. She was given oral prednisone and some topical to help with the tingling and itchiness....and may have to start the Rogaine regimen. *sigh* How do you all cope?
