Sisterhood of Women who Shaved their Heads

This group is for women who have taken the bull by the horns and decided to shave their heads. It is also for those that aspire to someday shave their head. Hopefully we can provide support, guidance and compassion to one another.

I sported the bald look first back in 2006. This time I have been bald since June. My alopecia was again progressing, and it was getting too hot for wig, so I decided shaving my head was best for me. I do wear baseball caps sometimes, between shaves, because I have a large circular spot area that is extremely noticeable, after just a couple of days. I do like to change up my look, from time to time, so once the weather cools down, you may see me rock a wig, occasionally. I also wear African attire periodically with wraps.

This group has reminded me of the quote, "...as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

The light you ladies shine has really inspired me.  I am working towards being bald in public full time.  I feel most "myself" like this at home and I hope this translates to the same feeling in public.  I don't care for wigs, hats and scarves.  I am wondering, how many of you are still active on AW and are bald full time?

Hi Cheryl,
Everyone has been very supportive. I don't really get that many stares, mostly from kids, but they're just curious. Some people that I don't know come up and ask questions, I like that. It makes things easier and more clear. I don't want people to feel sorry for me or think that I'm going through chemo. I want to say that i'm fine, it's just hair loss.

Hi everyone....just joined your group and this is my first "comment" since becoming a member of AW. I am 63 and developed AA in November that appears  to be progressing to AU. After several months of depression, crying and a wide range of emotions, I have come to a place of peace and acceptance with the hair loss. But I was tired of hair everywhere except on my head so I made the decision about two weeks ago to shave.  I agree with Debbie's comments of January 2014...."Shaving my head was the most freeing thing I have ever done".  I also wear a wig to work, and will continue to do so, but beginning to free more comfortable with "nothing at all" on my hairless head especially at home and around my rural neighborhood. Thanks for all the comments and encouragement to all. Madge

Hi Vicki,  I am curious to know how your family reacted to you shaving your head.

I shaved my head at the end of December, just before my family was coming for Christmas dinner. I was getting headaches daily from the head bands I was wearing to cover up the spots. It just got to be too much and more stressful trying to hide it. I go bald at work and in the food court etc. But I have yet to take my hat off at the grocery store or on the bus. It's been cold since I shaved so that's sort of the reason, but I'm going to work up the courage and do it soon. Congrats to all of you who have made the decision to go bald and be free. It's not for everyone, but I think we're making it easier for others one bald head at a time.

Shaving my head was the most freeing thing I have ever done.  I wear a wig to work but I am going to start that transition by putting a bald picture of myself on my desk.  This is a great group!

I've spoke with several members in this group, but just wanted to let the rest of you know about a book I'm working on. It's really starting to take shape, and I'm looking for additional stories from men, women and children in all stages of hairloss.

I didn't shave my head, but realize it would have been completely empowering for me, to take control of something that was taking over my life.

I've been featuring people who have made a difference with their experience by making choices to do something better, or to living up to their true potential. If you'd like to be part of this project, feel free to check out my website for "Head-On, Stories of Alopecia". It can be seen at www.baldgirlsrock.com. You can also see it on facebook under the "Head-On..." title. I would love it if you could "like" and "share" it so it will continue to encourage more people to share their stories. The alopecia community has always been so supportive of one another, and my hope is that word of this project will spread like wildfire. I look forward to hearing your story.

i am twelve years old and have shaved my head more then once or twice more like five or more times. I am still in elementary and the last time I shaved my head was last year and I did get some suprised reactions like " What did yoou do to your hair? " and stuff like that but no one made fun of me to my face so I did not really feel that bad about my alopecia and having shaved my head.
