I have had AU for nearly 17 years and have had only six colds (and never the flu) or anything like that. I wonder if the immune system being SO busy attacking hair follicles everywhere on your body that its like Arnold Schwarzenegger. I would like to hear whether any other alopecians (esp those with AU) have experienced a similar super-duty immune system?? Even cuts or scrapes heal VERY quickly.

Yep, me too! I have had a few more colds than you but they last a very short time and I never get bronchitis or pneumonia....very interesting!

cool, thanks for contributing that info, Jennifer :)

well, I open a fridge and get a cold
I have astma and allegie to dust
my immune system sucks, but that is just me...

Sorry to hear that. I do have asthma since since three years before i lost hair (but Advair is a Godsend)and chronic allergies since childhood as far as I'm constantly blowing my nose and having to clear my throat. Darn mucus. Claratin is helpful.

I am similar to you. Have AU and very rarely get sick. In my 24 years at work, I have never missed a day due to sickness. I asked my dermatologist if people with alopecia tend to have stronger immune systems but she said no. However, based on my experience, I think there could be a correlation.

Thanks for the feedback Bob

I believe if you have no other autoimmune diseases or allergies, yes, your immune system is like a super immune system. That's how I was when I was young and first had AU. Unfortunately know that I am older and have other allergies I feel my immune system is weakening. Although I don't always catch what everyone around me has, when I do get sick it takes forever for me to shake it. In the winter I tend to get a cold in late fall and it tends to stay till after the new year. I think a big part of it for me is diet. I think my immune system gets strong when I don't compromise it by eating sugar or gluten. As a child my mother was told to keep me off those foods, then I was told it my help my AU so I was all for it as an adult it has been so much harder to say no to those foods. Also as a child I was told I had a high amount of yeast in my body so that also could be my contributed to a weak immune system. I am hoping with reevaluating my diet, and taking these foods out again will boost my immune system to what it was when I was first diagnosed with AU

I hope so. i was tested twice for Celiac disease myself because I cannot gain weight.

I also have very few colds, but by the other hand, I have allergies, like rhinitis and skin allergies(they were previous to AU), and I also keep off sugar and gluten (like Deana) . But I think that I´m healthier since AU. Besides, my view of life changed completely (I do more exercise, I eat healthy food and I´m finally more optimist) I think all these facts help my immune system.

Thanks for the info and glad you were in the long run helped more than hindered by your AU. :)

I have AU and I've noticed that too. I'll get a head cold every once in a while but not very often. Although I too have allergies (dust mites, mold). I have heard that people with allergies have a higher likelihood of developing alopecia but have never heard anything about it correlating to colds.

Interesting, Laura. I also had allergies since my youth, by ten had severe hayfever which would trigger asthma attacks that Started about five years before the AU
