Has anyone tried a vinegar and water rinse to dissolve product build-up? I used to do this with my natural hair.

I've never used vinegar on my hh wigs. Perhaps, that is a good idea... how much vinegar, what kind and how often. I simply shampoo my wig when it is dirty or has too much of a build up of stuff. About a third of the base of my system is made of a silicone product which allows it to stick to my bald head without glue or tape. It is called a tourmaline wig (see hairconnnectiontoday.com for details. I'm wondering if vinegar would damage the silicon and make the hair fall out. Does anyone have the answer! Thanks, Dr. Bernice Williams
Good question. Apple cider vinegar (1/2 T mixed with one cup water) rinsed through hair after shampooing cuts debris and seems to close cuticles, leaving the hair shiny. Vinegar is used for so many things but I don't know the effect, if any, on your cap. I do know that vinegar acts as a toner.
When I "power-dose" my wig I do it off my head and be sure not to get it on the cap (mine is mesh) so that it doesn't loosen the knots, but you could probably do the same with the vinegar wash on your wig.
I am going to try it tonight and will report back. In the meantime I hope someone else chimes in because I really don't know what I'm doing!
I have had AU for over 20+ years. I clean mine with the regualr wig shampoo but use viniger in the water if it gets really nasty. I just pour a little in and walla. Not a problem. No smell just cuts thru the build up as was mentioned. I also no longer use the styling products because I found that they really put a build up on my wigs. Now I simply use my fingers and some water to style. Through out the work day-I re apply whenever I visit the ladies room. :-)
Very late reply to this post but I dilute baking soda and water to strip away mousse and hairspray build-up on my human hair wig. I do this every time I wash it (with over-the-counter dry-to-damaged hair shampoo/conditioner).

1)Comb the wig thoroughly before applying the mix (the hair should still be dry at this point).
2)Take about 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 3 cups of cold to luke-warm water, mix and then spray or pour over any area(s) with heavy product build-up.
3)Let the mixture set on the wig for about 2 minutes and then shampoo/condition as you normally would. IMPORTANT: DO NOT SUBMERGE YOUR HUMAN HAIR WIG IN A BASIN OR SINK TO SOAK. THIS MAY RESULT IN GOLF-BALL SIZED KNOTS. Simply spray or pour on the solution and rest the wig on a towel to set for the 2 minutes. Don't worry if the hair seems to get a little crunchy when you let the mixture set; this is just a reaction of the banking soda and product combining and both will come right out upon washing.

I have been doing this for over 2 years and there's absolutely no damaging effects. Your hair will return to silky smooth post-wash.
This is great! Thanks. Ironically, I have just started washing my face with baking soda. Who knew???
No problem, Stephanie! Hope it works out for you!
