My hair falls out and its white for like the first quarter inch at the root but it's not a thinner hair like typical of alopecia. I have asked my doctor what it means but she had no answer. Does this happen to anyone else??

Hi wise1, I read somewhere that the T cells that attack in Alopecia attack the melanin cells in the hair root, and that was why gray hairs are not usually targeted, but I really don't understand the way I only have white (not gray) hairs grow back?? unless thats all that is left of the hair and it's just trying hard to grow something, who knows really, I've asked about my white hairs and have never gotten a direct answer to it either. I have never noticed that the roots of my lost hairs are lighter, except the root bulbs are usually always there and they are lighter. but I don't think that is the same. Hope you (we) get a real answer here.

I've had it both ways. When I lost it all, it was thinner after the root. Now with the spots the hairs look normal when they come out.
