Yes, being from NY people pretty much come right out and ask but, where ever you are I think once people know they don't know what to say or ask. It's we that have to always have those just right responses and six years into this I still am trying to come up with them! When I get oh wow your hair is so shiny I say thanks. But, when it goes a step further and they ask how do you get such shiny hair, I say you can borrow it if you want it's a wig, I have alopecia. The nice New yorker wants to here about it, the not so nice one just wants to keep moving. :)
I have the same attitude and response as Michelle. One day, I was wearing Madison by Noriko in a gradient (rooted) color. A waitress at a local pub said, "Would you mind telling me who colors your hair? It's really hard to find a stylist in this town who does color so well." I smiled and told her that she could get this exact color for $180...becaue it's a wig!" Most of the time when I get compliments on my hair, I end up in a fun conversation with someone. I don't see wigs as something to be embarassed about. For me, going au naturale would take real guts; wearing a wig is a breeze.
Gosh I am sooooooooo tired of what others think and do yada yada...go with how you feel...and what your gut tells you. If you want to shock the curious or educate go for it...if you are down and want a laugh invent a good one about a hairstylist they will never find , if they are cancer surviors go easy and give them a high five..... white lies about your hair, wigs, hats, clothes don't count in the eye of the all powerful!!!!!besides he made you this way!!!!!enjoy life it is good.....you could always reply to "how did you get your hair so straight?" with a reply like " it's magic and it takes lots of talent...." hence you are not lying and keep them guessing
