Hi everyone...just recently I started using the womens rogaine and it had helped alot the only thing about it is ...the liquid is just a mess! So now I'm doing the mens rogaine because it's stronger. The down side to this is I've lost soooo much hair! Why is this happening? Now I'm considering going back on the women's. I do have alopecia areata and I have to wonder if I was going to lose that hair anyway. Went to the dermatologist yesterday and got more steroid injections...they seem to be helping but very slowly. My hair is falling out at such a fast rate now since I've been using the men's rogaine and my derm. wants me to use Clobex(which is a topical)before I go to bed. I personally hate it because it makes my hair sooo greasy. I'm so depressed that I just don't know what to do anymore. Anyone's input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Linda

Rogaine can cause an increase in shedding when you first start it - so maybe switching to the 5% is acting like you just started it? My derm says the 2% does not work - you need the 5% - even women. I would ask your derm how long you should give the 5% before switching back to the 2%.

Thanks for the reply....still using the men's but if it gets worse with the shedding I'm switching back to the women's. I'm hoping that the shedding will taper off a little. Tomorrow I'm going to a hair supply store. I just want to be prepared. Extensions, wigs whatever!

Definitely, get a wig. You need to be prepared. When it happened to me, I had enough hair to hide my bald spots on Friday & not enough by Monday.
Also, it's easier for the wig salesperson to fit you when they see what you're hair is like. It's best to go somewhere that specializes helping people about to undergo chemo or alopecia patients. They will be sympathetic.
I've been using Men's Rogaine - I rub it in with my hand.
I've also been using Dithro cream at night. It stains towels, etc. But, it's working. I started it in June & now I have significant growth. Also getting corisone shots.
Also, check out the video on this site on how to apply eyebrow makeup.
This condition sucks, but life goes on.

Hi Linda,

I can relate. It seems like my hair started falling out at a faster rate after the injections and Nioxin. In July, my doctor told me to use Rogaine. I started with the women's, but my doctor wanted me to use the Men's. Since I started using the men's, my hair began to fall out even faster. I am so disgusted! Everyday I try to encourage myself and be hopeful. If all of my hair comes out, I want be allright with it, but I can live with it. I am still looking and researching for answers. Be hopeful Linda. We will get through this.

There are warning labels on Rogaine and Minoxadil for women still wanting to get pregnant or have a normal birth. Be wary.

If you have the 12-16 gene markers for alopecia (see research), especially the 16 that may mean AU in the future, then the money may better go to fabulous wigs or accessories to make you feel GOOD rather than the expense and pain of something that may never "cure" this. I went through UV treatments, tar shampoo, shots, prednisone, cortisone, creams etc. over the years before finally saying, "ENOUGH!" to feeling like a guinea pig. Now, I invest in something to put on top and get me out the door to just go on living life.

No one can answer that "Why?" question for you. We just get the genes we get.

Wow! I truly think you just became my hero!=) It seems of late I've been a complete shut in and I am so sick of it! I used to be sooo happy and now I need to find my way to get past this depression. I still have hair but like I said to others my hair is disappearing quickly. How long have you had it? And how do you cope?

Since 1963, off and on. While all hair grew in ages 20-38, I made up for lost dating time, got married, had kids. When I got AU in 1994 and the hubby ran off (1999) with his younger, long-haired secretary, I just gave up on hair AND men. For awhile. I have only dated two men since 1999 (both with little or no hair, by the way!). I cope by getting involved with career, more college, reading, socializing on computer with out-of-state pals or AW folk, and visiting church friends locally. Movies, art and music are also part of my world, and traveling and gardening fill the time some years. Experimenting with wigs and make-up can be fun...love those mall make-overs! This year, I helped decorate and plan a great Halloween party with a friend. My grandchild also makes me smile. Best of all was a whirlwind month of trips to mountains, wineries, restaurants, forest and ocean this summer! It helps to get out of town...and take the wig off in new places!

I have used it for two months and my hair has no fallen out. I will keep at it for another 3 months as they say it takes 6 moths to renew the hair cycle. I hope it does for you. I am going back to my wig on Monday.
