Stories from the front lines...or really weird/funny things that have happened over the years

Okay, from time to time I will post something odd/funny that happened to me in regards to my alopecia areata.

I have had AA for 41 years so far, and there is a lot of time for story fodder. Things that make me laugh looking back at them.  Some might read some and say "how is that funny?"  And to them I say...Personally, I made a decision a long time ago that Alopecia was not going to define my view of the world...at least not in a negative way.

I'll start off with a cute little story of being a dad...and the look you get when it's bath time and you don't have any idea what to do in regards to a simple task.

My daughter was a few months old, and my wife had been bathing her regularly since I was working a lot and she was home at the time.  A month or so into it, she looked at me and said that I was going to have to start helping, which I had no problem with, I was actually looking forward to it.

We drew the bath and got her into the little tubby thing.  My wife looks at me and says, "wash her hair and I will be right back.  With that she left the room.  She returned a few minutes later with me splashing Hannah with water.  Hair still dry.

She just looked at me with that look that says, what are you doing?  She wassn't mad, and simply told me that I wasn't going to hurt her by washing her hair.  I nodded and said simply, "I have no idea what I am doing."

Quizzical look and then it dawned on her.  "Just a little drop of shampoo is enough to do her hair."  Then she started laughing.  As did I as I washed the babies hair.  "You really had no idea how much shampoo to use?"

"Nope.  Never used it, and when I did get my hair washed, my mom did it cause I was three."

We still laugh about it to this day.

What a funny story! Who woulda thunk that a dad with alopecia woudn't know how much shampoo to use on his baby's head?

I'm enjoying your affable spirit.Welcome to Alopecia World!

Thnaks RJ.

I have no time to be down on not having hair.  Honestly, I wish what little hair I do get would go away.  That's where I am though.  I do have time for being empathetic to others as they go through their journey though.  We all have different roads and roadblocks.

I hope others can/will post some stories here of their own experiences that shed a lighter view on the Alopecia condition.

Love your story. Lol

lol... keep the stories coming! :-)

I love your story. Let me tell you about my daughter with Alopecia Universalis. She was 5 and was in her dance class. They were getting ready for their big dance recital. If you have ever been in a room of mom's getting ready for a dance recital, I think you will understand how stressed out people get. They were discussing how to wear their hair for the dance recital. This was going on for some time, with moms arguing about how their daughter's hair looks good this way or that. The poor dance instructor was at a loss, when my daughter raises her hand. Her instructor asked what she needed and she replied, "I just wanted to know if it was o.k. to wear my hair down. I really don't like wearing it up." Everyone died laughing and then immediately shut up, knowing they were all being crazy for nothing.

Another one of my favorite stories was the first time my daughter wore a wig. We had noticed I often got dirty looks when my little angel was being rotten in a store and I got on to her or I wouldn't buy her that piece of candy etc. She would often have people feel sorry for her and sometimes even offer to buy the toy or candy. Of course I came off as the mean mom. She talks to everyone and getting through the store can take some time. After getting her wig she went to the grocery store with me. When we were heading back home, she mentioned she didn't think she was going to like her new wig. I said she didn't have to wear it if she didn't want to, but what was the reason. She said we went through the whole store and no one stopped to talk to me, and when I asked for things no one seem to care you weren't getting them for me. My silly daughter missed the attention she was getting.

I could write a book with all the silly things she has done. She is my little comedian and alopecia has only given her a lot of material to make people laugh.

Oooh...I got a few of those not safe for work stories myself.

Great story and wonderful that you took the time to "interact" with the kid.  Life can be so fun if we let it.

David I love your story! I have a quick one. I teach high school and for a while I was able to cover up my hair loss braid extensions. However, one of my very keen students complimented me on my braids and asked how long it took. I told her about 6 hours. She remarked, "6 hours! But you don't have that much hair!" Without a breath she begin sharing her braid extension expertise for speedy styles and even introduced me to the half-wig, which was much cooler than wearing a whole one. Out of the mouth of babes!

The student becomes the teacher.  Wonderful to hear, and hopefully it has made your life easier.

These are great.  Keep 'em coming.  I want to have a place that people can come and read about the lighter side of this.

Another quick one.

Back in 1992, during and after the Summer Olympics, I had an interesting phenomena happen.I was asked repeatedly if I was part of the mens Olympic Volleyball team, who had shaved their heads in support of a team mate and protest of a decision during one of the games.

As tempting as it was, I could not in good conscious say I was and take advantage of that situation.  Although, I thought about it a few times.

Great stories!

Okay get this.
I had my appointment at the DMV today and was wondering what was going to happen.
The young woman at the desk asked me "is everything the same"
I reply to her "well not quite everything"
She looked at me for a few seconds and says "Well you still have brown hair dont you"
I reply "Nope not anymore"
We laugh hahaha and btw change my weight from 185 to 200 as well more chuckles
Time to get your picture taken along with a new thumbprint.......

Yeah.  They ask me hair color and I just laugh as well.
