Wow, has my hair gotten worse real fast! Just a few weeks ago, my dermatologist said it was all growing in and I didn't need shots. Days later, it started coming out in clumps.

I just got 5" cut off because the long hair was somehow making the bald patches more obvious (it was getting kind of stringy, and it would separate and "expose" them.) So, now I have a chin-length haircut (I'll post a new pic later!) and can barely comb over the bald spots on the top of my head.

So ... should I get a partial wig just in case I wake up one morning and I can't do a comb-over?

Thanks!

Hi Aimee!

When my thinning hair started to become more difficult to cover up i bought an emergency wig just in case one morning i woke up and what was left would be lying on my pillow. Just knowing i had it made me feel a lot better and i felt that i worried less about my hair falling out because i had a back up just in case. Maybe you could just buy a couple of hats or scarves instead.

Take care, Melinda
Hi Aimee

It is always so very difficult when hair is shedding to know whether to buy a wig now/later/or never. If you are getting to the stage where you think you may feel more comfortable with something to cover up with I would suggest that you start investigating the alternatives. Like hats, scarves, toppers, full hairpieces etc. Knowing what is available and working out what you need is an important part of the process when dealing with Alopecia. Start investigating alternatives that you feel may work for you.

If you have active alopecia and it is still shedding I would be careful with purchasing a partpiece/topper as it may become redundant. I feel that possibly scarves, hats and maybe a cheaper hairpiece alternative may work a little better for your situation. I think it is always very important to look at all that is available including the more expensive hairpieces as these may be good alternatives if the worst case scenario was to happen as it is helpful to know that whatever happens you are going to be alright.

Hope that helps a little.

hi aimee,

yes, i think it's a good idea to get a wig just in case and i also think it's best to get one now, while you still have hair so you don't buy one out of desperation. this will give you some time to shop around and find one that works well for you. the first couple of wig shops i went to were informative, but none of them were me. but, when i did put on one that worked i knew i'd be able to wear it and feel comfortable. i ended up wearing mostly hats, but there were several occasions when i needed hair and i loved that i had a really good wig to rely on. good luck!
I think that is a decision only you can make, and just do what makes you comfortable, but it is kinda cool cause all of a sudden you can have locks like Angelina Jolies, but if you are going to get a wig, the human hair lasts about 1 year and can cost 1,000 to 2,000 and if you wash it you have to style it, I brought a high grade synthetic ( hi grade so it doesn't shine!!! lol) and it looked so real and it didn't matter that it was synthetic, the longer they are the quicker they will ruin ( as it rubs on your clothes).
I went wig shopping everywhere!!! and the best place by far is Creative Wigs on Swantson Street, Victoria Melbourne ( soz not sure where you live) and it only cost $350. If you get a wig make sure you get a mono ( fake scalp- looks more real)
good for a first one to get used to it

good luck xoxox Nikita
