I just got my first steroid shot yesterday, and my dermatologist said that my hair may start to grow back in 4 to six weeks. I really can't wait that long. I have told only my closest friend that I have AA, but I still feel like everyone is staring at me when I walk through the halls at school. I still have tons of hair, but it sheds so much. I don't know what to do. I want to talk to my mom about shaving, but I think I should wait until my second appointment. I need some advice on what to do.

Hang in there. When I was going through the shedding phase, cute hats became my look. Never wore them before but turned out that they made me look cute and hid the hair loss. A bit of a confidence booster.
Hi there,

I've been bald since elementary school and I know how hard it is dealing w/classmates.......All I can say about that is one day you will look back and realize that most people stared or made fun because they didn't know what's going on. If I was to go back in time to my school days, I'd lose the wigs and hats and tell eveyone about Alopecia.

I had my first steroid injection today because my eyebrows started to thin out. Wow, the injections hurt like a mo-fo.....As far as shaving, do whatever you think will make you the most comfortable. Take a look at some of beautiful women on Alopecia World, beauty has nothing to do with hair it's from within and what you make of it......
Hi Leah! I am sorry to hear about your hair :( The steroid shots worked for me for about a year until my hair starting coming out in bigger patches (then I switched to oral steroids...I do not recommend). I agree with Aimee that once you figure out some ways to pin your hair up to hide the spots you will feel much better. I did that for about 2-3 years and it worked fabulously (except for swimming). Good luck and feel free to ask me any questions you may have :)
when i was going through this i used to tease (back comb) hair and put lots of hairspray to cover my spots. It works really well if your trying o cover patches on the back or sides of your head. And it was a plus having my hair look all full and nice. Im bald now but i would definetly reccomend learning how to tease it.
