Does anyone have any recommendations to sooth the scalp pain which for me occurs just before hair falls out? I always say that it is my hair attacking me and I know that in a day or so I will lose hair in the spot where there is pain. For me it is quite painful and usually is accompanied by a burning sensation. I would love to know if anyone has any remedies?

I have struggled with this for almost 4 years now. I woke up to severe scalp pain and the hair loss started a few weeks later. I have been to MANY doctors and specialists dealing with scalp and hair and most of them never heard of my condition. I still have yet to find a solution. My doctors prescribed me anti inflammatory shampoos that also treat dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis because I have that as well. I have tried natural oil rubs and supplements. Nothing has helped. The pain comes and goes and feels like burning, stinging, biting, knife stabs, pulling, etc... The pain varies from day to day. It can also turn into severe itching. Please keep me posted on anything that helps you!

Julie, your symptoms truly sound identical to mind and I am sorry to hear that nothing has helped. In theory anti-inflammatory shampoo sounds like the right way to go, but it is good to know that it did not help. You would think that this would be more common than it seems to be. I appreciate your response and will keep you posted on anything I find.

I too have all the symptoms you refer to above..It really stinks that they have nothing that can help us!! :( I am really at a point of not knowing what to do anymore :(

I was to told to use a heavy moisturiser - that it was caused by my skin becoming drier (????)

Are they suggesting using a moisturizer on your scalp? I still have some hair, so that would be messy for me! I have tried all the medicated shampoos and sulfate free ones. I have also tried the ones with moisturizers in them. Nothing seems to help. They either make my scalp so dry or very oily. The pain comes and goes but when it isn't there, my scalp is very itchy and will have chunks of gunk. I also have seb derm though...

Keep us posted everyone!

Hi Julie...finally someone who understands what I am feeling. I also get exactly that feeling on the scalp plus stinging at the eyebrows and a pricking feeling at the eyelashes...the hair either comes out right after that when I touch it or it will be coming out soon. I honestly believe I am feeling the immune system attacking the follicles ( I have diffuse alopecia areata). I don't think anything will help because it is internal. I have felt slight relief when I used clobetasol lotion ( its very strong) but its only temporary.

As I was reading your post, I ran my fingers through my stringy hair and had about 15 strands come out in one section. I hate this. My scalp hasn't been too bad with the pain but the seb derm is getting worse. I use medicated shampoos like Garnier for dandruff or selsun blue or head and shoulders every other day. I use Suave Daily on the off days. I can't stand this. My hair texture grows back really strange. It's wirey and brittle and kinky. Do you have the same thing happening when your hair grows in? It just feels so different...

Hi Julie
I have scarring alopecia due to lichen planopilaris and seb dermatitis as well. When I went to see the consultant in the summer I had great big chunks of scale on my head & it was really itchy, but the alopecia was just on the parting. She recommended a number of things, one of which was 'Oilatum' shampoo. The other things I didn't get on with, as they seemed to make my alopecia worse. The Oilatum though, has been amazing on the seb derm, and all the big crusts have fallen off. The alopecia has spread, but I think that would have happened anyway. My head is a bit complicated with all these things going on ! I have to say, that although I have many bald patches now, I never actually see any hair falling out. Not sure why??! Just about to start using clobetasol but not sure how that will help as I don't really have much itching now that the crusts have gone.
It's all a bit rubbish isn't it?

A good remedy for pain is CBD oil. Perhaps you need a clean CBD oil specifically for pain.
