I've been bald since elementary school but have always had eyebrows. Recently I've noticed my eyebrows thinning out and it appears that in the area where the hair loss is there is some swelling and redness....My dermatologist seems to think it's not my alopecia causing the hair loss due to the "rash" that's there. Anybody experiencing something like this?

Well the treatment for a rash and Alopecia are just about the same so we shall see what the creams in injections do.
i lost my entire right eyebrow and i'm currently losing my left. i noticed w/ my left eyebrow has this "rash" too, it's almost a round oval shape that goes from the middle of my left eyebrow to the end. it's not red, but it does swell and looks like a rash. personally, i think the alopecia caused my rash, and my rash sometimes swells, itches, and burns, and i do believe it's the alopecia causing the hair loss not the rash. i hope this helps!
Clare, thanks for that post......Like I said, the treatment for both is the same so we shall see.....
Hi Eric,

I've never experienced this before but am curious as to what the rash is from. Did the Derm have an explanation or give a treatment option?

Jeff
I have been using the cream they gave me for 3 weeks now w/very little re-growth and it appears that the redness and swelling is still there. I have a follow-up appointment on Thursday which I believe I will be getting cortisone injections. Thanks for the post Jeff...
Is the cream you are using steroidal? It seems that 3 weeks is a long time for a rash....
Hi Eric,

Not sure this is the same...but I tend to always see red/pink itchy area on my scalp before a new bald spot appears. My derm told me that is the immune reaction/inflammation (white blood cells attacking the hair follicles) I am feeling. I have noticed that the area usually stays pink while the spot is "active"- still getting bigger- and once the skin color returns to normal I will start to see some re-growth. Which for me can take a couple of months....

I also use steroid creams/foam on my spots and I do think it helps! So hopefully you will have some relief soon!!

Heather
Hi Heather,

Thanks for the helpful info......I plan on passing the feedback I got from this discussion to my dermatologist on Thursday. I think she is going to refer me to a hair loss specialist. I've accepted being bald, but losing my eyebrows is really upsetting because with my eyebrows I look like someone who shaves his head. Hope that makes sense.....
That TOTALLY makes sense! I do know there are some people on this site who have had success with injections for eyebrow growth!(I've heard the creams cause acne if used on the face??) I hope it works for you! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. And if need be- the tattoo's look great. Check out Jeffrey's profile page to see some up close pics of the tattoos. You would never notice that they were not real eyebrows! I know it is not the same has having them.... but at least there is a viable plan B. Sending positive thoughts your way.....
Thanks for the complement on my eyebrows Heather!!! For me they really make a world of diffrence.
Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it.....I'll check out Jeffrey's eyebrow tattoos but with my luck mine would grow back as soon as I got the tattoo and I'd end up looking like Bert from Sesame Street lol
HEY Bert is pretty darn cool!! !
